  • Fantastic train car for a 2
Style: Train Engine
Fantastic train car for a 2.5 year and older child (my child got this for 3rd birthday). My child LOVES being able to control it both on the train and from a distance using the controller. Having the ability to make choices at this age is so important and this r/c train really helps with this. We found that each time we start playing with it we first need to hit the center button on the train to “wake it up” and allow it to connect with the remote control. We have been using it for hours a day over this past week and the batteries have lasted well and we have not had to change them yet. Two cons, which could be big ones for your child: 1) this train does not always handle gaps in tracks or hills very well. I believe this is because the back tires are not as well-threaded or thickly-lined with rubber as other battery-powered trains we own so it gets stuck when going up hills and in spots on tracks with gaps. Be sure to purchase some sure track connectors to hold pieces together however won’t help if you have a gap in viaduct or bridge pieces; 2) falls off track when going over short curve pieces - can be frustrating but that’s what the “train’s engineer” is there for. These cons, however, don’t make me deduct a star because my child still gets that much enjoyment from it. As a new mom to this world of trains and after reading countless reviews and blogs of tracks and engines and having some great and not so great purchases, here are my recommendations. - I don’t recommend the Brio RC Train Engine be the first train a child gets when they get into trains on wooden tracks - this r/c train is like the 3rd step or phase after the child “masters” or gets bored with their wooden tracks. I’ve had great luck with my kiddo and maintaining his interest by adding pieces in phases when his interest starts dwindling. “Phase 1” simple track layout and train cars my child pushes (this let my child experiment without too many choices and learn at own pace). “Phase 2” adding a battery-powered engine that only goes back and forth by clicking button on train (no remote control, some of these battery-powered trains have a “free play” option to also make them like a train your child has to push) and adding more curves and switches as options to the wooden tracks. “Phase 3” this r/c train and elevations in your wooden tracks. Please let me know if this was helpful. Thank you! ... show more

  • Not very Fast
Style: Train Engine
If you have more than one remote control, the signals get mixed, so you have to make sure they operate on different signals (A and B). The train is not very fast, and the batteries die quickly within the actual train

  • Very poor quality, sort reviews by "latest first"
Style: Train Engine
All these points below are mentioned by other reviews, please look at all the recent reviews vs the old ones, don't let the rating fool you, that's all based on old reviews!! It's not RC but infrared, that means you have to point the remote to the train. That in itself isn't the problem, my TV's remote works fine but this Infrared Remote is like the tv remotes from the 1980s you have to point directly, from a maximum of about 6 inches, and even then the remote fails (very) frequently. I promise you your toddler will be super frustrated with it and ditch it and just push the buttons on the train vs. using the remote. Making the "RC" part of this toy useless so you're honestly better off just buying a non RC train that your toddler can push the buttons on and save them the frustration and yourself a lot of money. The engine is not strong enough to pull more than 1 cart up a simple (official BRIO) tunnel without stalling. The design of the train prevents it from having enough traction to reverse over a BRIO tunnel (with no cars attached) the wheels will spin while the train will stay in it's place, stalled on the incline, until it decides to derail itself. The magnet is attached so loosly that it drags on the tracks behind the train, making the reverse function useless without any carts attached because the magnet will snag the rails at connections (keep in mind that the train doesn't have enough power for cars so you're going to be riding it without cars attached, thus a dragging magnet) The magnet isn't strong enough to keep more than 1 cart connected, frequently decoupling mid-ride. Now going back to my first point, if the train is more than 6 inches away when that happens your kid will have to go over and push the button to stop the train by hand and strart it by pushing the button on the train. If you are so lucky to have it decouple within reach of the remote, AND it so graces you with actually responding and stopping and reversing to couple your car(s) again we're back to my last point, where the magnet drags and snags the rails when reversing, so there you are again, manually picking up the train and pushing the buttons. Lastly (I know, how much can there be wrong with a small toy!) It derails by itself for absolutely no apparent reason other than that the wheels run out of the tracks at connections and corners. They are super loose and wobbly (poor quality). Now the good part, the train looks cool and if the remote works it's fun to sound the horn and toggle the lights. ... show more
