Breakthrough Photography's step-up lens adapter ring is firstly made from brass and not aluminum. Just like B+W's filters which are made from brass, this is important because brass expands and contracts at different temperatures than aluminum. In essence this adapter ring will stay true to form better than an equivalent aluminum one, allowing you to easily attach and remove it and not have the dreaded stuck filter syndrome whereby the filter you have attached to your lens has expanded or contracted just enough that you can no longer remove it (at least until the temperature has normalized again). Living in the South where we have long hot summers, this is important to me and one of the main reasons I thought I would try this step-up adapter. The adapter has an electroplated black finish to it so that it fairly much matches your lens and this is harder to scratch and look bad. It also helps with weathering making this weather and corrosion proof. Breakthrough Photography's adapter also has a ribbed outer edge which is excellent as it gives you much needed grip making it very easy to screw on and off your lens and also for when you are attaching and removing your filter. The main reason I got this adapter is that I have a bunch of filters for my Canon 24-70IIL lens which takes a 82mm filter, but I also have the Canon 100-400IIL and the 70-200IIL lenses which take 77mm filters. This step-up adapter would allow me to use my 82mm filters on my other L lenses removing the need to buy separate 77mm versions of each filter (which are over $100 a pop aren't exactly cheap). I tested this out this weekend with the solar eclipse. I have a 82mm ND10000 solar filter which I wanted to use on my 100-400 lens. It worked flawlessly. The filter fit fine, with the ribbed outer edge I could very quickly remove the filter during totality and quickly screw it back on once totality finished. It worked a charm. I realize this is slightly more expensive than the cheaper aluminum step-up filter adapters but it is thoroughly worth it.

Was a little annoyed that I had to buy new filters to replace all of my 77mm filters to fit with a new 82mm Nikon Z series lens. Oh well I'll just get some more (annoying) step up rings. Annoying because I have to carry them and annoying because, working events and things like that as a full timer, I'm bumping and banging gear around. And having a larger filter "hanging off" the edge of a smaller opening lens makes for another spot to catch or damage something. Well. These arent the aluminum, sheet metal feeling crummy step rings that became so common! And so commonly become stuck that I carry a filter wrench in my case. These are heavy and ever so slightly "flexible" as only brass can be when you screw it into your lens threads. Which means far less of a chance of getting it stuck. Nice finish and super nice knurled edge that might just make the need for a filter wrench obsolete. Time will tell on that one. Just bought a couple more sizes! Will update as I use them in the real world on jobs from cold to humid to dusty conditions. But I'm feeling good right out of the box and during the first few uses.

I purchased a inexpensive ring flash and some closeup lenses (the kind that screw in front of your lens) for a project. The ring flash uses adaptors that also screw into the lens, but they are made of plastic and not threaded on the inside. The adaptors for the flash weren't able to screw far enough into my filter or close up lens to not deform and fall out. As I was under a time crunch, I found a work around by not using the flash, however knowing I would want to use the flash at a later time i looked for an answer, then it hit me an adaptor ring might work. The cost of the Breakthrough item was double the price of others, but it was made from brass and in the USA so I bought it. It arrived today and boy howdy it was so well made and packaged it took me all of one second to know i had made the right move, well worth it. By the way, this adaptor cost almost as much as the ring flash but I will be using it way after that flash bites the dust. Great product, thank you

3 MONTH FOLLOW UP: I had originally rated this a 3 stars, now lowered it to 1. As previously mentioned, I always had some difficulty getting the filters to screw into the adapter and I still do. The reason that I have lowered this to a one is because I had a filter FALL OFF of the adapter in a studio setting. I'm not running and gunning or wildly swinging my camera around, just carrying it attached to a sling strap around my shoulder. I had screwed my filter in until it was difficult to turn (only about one full rotation) but in the end it somehow came loose and fell off just from me walking around the studio. After 1 month using this step up adapter, I purchased a 2 pack of step up adapters for $8. My filters have no problem screwing all the way in to the cheap adapters and after 2 months of use have not fallen off yet. I purchased the 67mm to 72mm stepup. I'm in a Sony ecosystem so I purchased this to adapt the filters I have for my Sony 70-200/f4 to Tamron 28-75/f2.8. My three filters (VND, CPL, and UV) all screw in just fine to the 70-200, very smooth and snug. However when screwing the filters into the adapter, it is not very smooth. My UV filter fit on the best, it started smooth but after a couple turns, became a little tougher to turn. If you push past it, it became very inconsistent, kind of like a joint that isn't evenly greased, it would be easy to turn and then suddenly hard to turn and back to easy again etc.... I don't think my VND actually fits into the adapter as I can't get it to rotate more than a single full revolution before it gets stuck. As you can see in the picture, the VND(top) has a large gap between the base of the adapter but the UV filter(bottom) has a very small gap. The 67mm side that screwed onto the lens worked just fine, it is smooth all the way through and stays there.
