I have tried several of these types of hair removers since the first one came out in the 80's. I have never found one I could keep and actually use. They have all been over the top painful and not that great on the results. I kept thinking over the years the technology had to get better but it really did not and actually I am not really sure how technology could make pulling your hair out less painful but Braun managed it. I was very pleasantly surprised. The pain was minimal and it worked with one or two passes. I really put it to the test. I left my hair longer than you should and did not use water or shaving cream as advised. Still worked fantastic. I did both full legs in under a half hour and a week later they are still so smooth. It does hurt a little but in my opinion a lot less painful than waxing. I also think it depends on what body part you are yanking hair out of and your own personal pain tolerance. I am hesitant to try my arm pits. The longer your hair is plus how much you have also is a factor. My calves were definitely less painful to me than my thighs however my friend thinks its less painful on her thighs so pain tolerance is very subjective. The various attachments are great and and handy to have. The epilator part has little roller balls that almost feel like they are massaging while your removing your hair and afterwards my legs feel so nice and stimulated. The light is invaluable and makes it so you can really sit anywhere and see what your doing. It has kept a charge through two full leg hair removing sessions. This one is a keeper and I will no longer be shaving or waxing my legs......finally. ... show more

This is the Braun Epilator Silk-epil 5 device. This is a really high quality product from the Braun family - with that name you would expect it to be a very well made, effective, and long lasting product, and I am happy to say this is completely accurate. This epilator works very well, it does its main job perfectly. Yes there is some mild tugging and pinching from the pulls but it is still very effective for what you get, and that is several weeks of a hairless finish! This version of the 5 series comes with an extra accessory, a foil shaver for those extra sensitive spots, that snaps on the main unit very easily. You can use this wet which is huge. There is a bright light to see what you're doing, and there are two speeds which is nice for different areas. The plug is proprietary, which isn't ideal, but it is fine in that at least the plug is included (some companies are cheapening out on this, but not Braun). This works well and charges quickly. The trimmer plastic cover does get clogged pretty quickly and obviously more so if it’s a neglected area. The blade has stayed sharp after several uses. So far I have had no issues with it and works well in the shower. Overall I would recommend

The Braun Silk-épil 5 Epilator is a great entry level epilator with that Braun quality that every knows is top notch. Made in Germany. Definitely not their top tier, but still works great. The epilator head seems to be slightly more narrow than the other higher end models but that's okay, it just increases the amount of passes you must do. It's still fairly uncomfortable at first but that's to be expected with what you're doing. The light is crucial when you looking upside-down try to get into those tight spots. It charges quickly and the battery last fairly long - long enough for any session I have done. Overall, very good value for the price. Highly recommend. ... show more

It works! I followed the instructions to a T and with some practice, I was able to get a smooth "shave" but as others have stated, it is not painless. However, my legs are still smooth a week later so I'm on the fence still as to whether that pain is worth it or not. I don't wax because I don't like how painful that is so take my review with a grain of salt - if you can handle the pain and live by the motto "beauty is pain" then you will be just fine and this product will benefit you for sure! ... show more

I've used this type of torture device many years and years ago so wondered if they've improved at all. It's pretty much the same. There's two settings but I prefer the high setting. Get it over with quickly. Leaves you smooth for quite awhile. I haven't been brave enough to try it on my face yet because I have pretty sensitive skin but eventually I will. I also haven't used it in the shower. Only on dry skin and while I do get a few red bumps, it's not bad at all to stop using it. The least amount of time I spend shaving, the better. ... show more
