I find the scent of this candle to be intoxicating and captivating, but it probably isn't for everyone. It's extremely smoky, resinous and pungent, and gives a strong sense of breathing in the fumes of a burning campfire. The notes mention pear but I don't detect any hint of fruitiness or sweetness-- but it doesn't need that, in my opinion. I like nice scents and I like candles, so I tend to buy candles at a discount. The rare times I've splurged on a pricier candle, I haven't been impressed enough to keep purchasing it vs a random candle I find at Marshalls. I decided to try out Boy Smells Hinoki Fantome because I heard good things about the scent. It is, unfortunately, better than any old random candle. It's wonderful! The big thing for me is it fills our open concept living room/dining room when either burned or melted with a candle warmer. I mostly buy soy-based candles, and maybe it's the coconut + soy wax mixture, but this candle throw its scent farther and more noticeably than the candles I typically buy. The scent itself is lightly sweet and earthy (and not cloyingly so). I wasn't sure I liked the scent when I smelled the candle by itself, but when it disperses with burning or melting, it's subtle and complex. I'll be buying again and I'm mad about it. ... show more

This is a very beautiful & mysterious fragrance. Maybe like asian temple incense but hard to describe; not fruity, spicy, vanilla, or too sweet. Just right. Its a slow burn & i like the simple black jar.

Arrived damaged, with no wicks to light. The candle wax was also completely separated from the jar, and wax was all over the packaging. I could’ve lived with that, but two of the three wicks were also missing so I couldn’t even light the candle to get an even burn. I had to double check that I actually purchased this from Boy Smells and not a third-party scam seller. I can’t believe Boy Smells is allowing sales in their name with this lack of QA/QC. Amazon is completely mishandling their products; I’ve ordered straight from the brand before and never had these subpar packaging issues. I’m surprised it didn’t arrive with broken glass based on the lack of packaging. Took a chance to buy from their Amazon storefront when buying other home goods and won’t be doing that again. Candle smells amazing, but it will have to be shipped back for replacement! ... show more

It does smell quite good, however the scent doesn't go far. You gotta have the candle right next to you to smell it, doesn't really fill up even a small room. Probably wouldn't recommend paying $50 for this unless you're fine with only smelling it when you're within a few feet of it.
