Top Amazon Reviews

  • Easily top budget pencil brand
Black widow is easily my top budget pencil brand. Their customer service is amazing. I had a duplicate of one pencil therefore meaning I was missing one color, and I emailed the company and was promptly sent a replacement. The pencils themselves are amazing. Soft but not as quick to break as Prismacolor, super pigmented, and hold a point very well. Just get them, we all buy a ton of crappy budget pencils and we deserve a decent set. ... show more

  • Nice new light colors but set is not necessary to color light skin.
Edit: My new light skin set arrived today, one day after my complaint. So, good job Amazon. Having not shared an envelope with a case of cat food, it arrived undamaged & was the correct item this time. Disclaimer: I’m not an artist. I color in coloring books. I also do not color skin. I bought these pencils just so I would have all 180 Black Widow colors. I really like the brand. Some of the colors in this set are very close to colors already found in other sets. If you are looking for light skin colors & you have all the other sets, you can use what you have in them. For example, mushroom, peach & light pink from the Monarch set & light mocha from the dark skin set. It’s got a couple very similar flesh tone colors that are nice to have (Egg Shell & Murk) but IMHO you don’t really need this set to color light skin. After swatching them out, I got the impression all of the Black Widow colors were formulated & then someone decided to pick colors from them that could fit in a skin color set. Might have been better to formulate skin colors for that purpose exclusively. I’m taking one star off for that. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy with the set. I’m more than halfway down some of my light pencils (like Mushroom) so these will help fill the gap they will leave when gone. I love that bright yellow color, Sunburst. It’s almost fluorescent & goes over darker colors to add a glint of sunshine. Also Murk will go fast. It blends well with Leather from the dark skin set (I use a lot of light tans). The mellow oranges (sherbet, saffron, & rust) can be used for salmon colors & blend well with the stronger oranges from other sets. This set also includes a duplicate white that I use for blending (Casper & Snow are identical to the eye). I needed a new one. One way to use your light colors is to blend with them. I love Black Widow & prefer them to Prismacolor. They are bit nicer than Goldfaber which I also use now. Not as waxy as Prismacolor but plenty soft enough. No problem sharpening them but if any pencil brand consistently breaks on you, it’s not the pencil but the sharpener. The core of soft wax pencils can be twisted by a sharpener & snap. Black Widow is a great brand to use in adult coloring books. Some of the more pricey brands are overkill IMO when used this way. Cheap pencils can often get the job done but if you want to blend & do other effects you need a good high wax pencil like Black Widow. Also they feel so smooth to use. I’m worth them. ORIGINAL: The light skin set arrived today packaged in a plastic unlined envelope along with my case of cat food. Needless to say, the tin was dented. Be very careful what you order along with your pencils because they all get packaged together & soft wax pencils are breakable. My problem is that the outside of the tin said light skin set but the pencils inside were the dark skin set. Before the inside plastic was applied, the covers to the tins must have been switched. Somewhere someone is opening their dark skin set to find my light skin! I was looking forward to using them today as they are the only set I don’t have. With the new set of 36 coming out this summer, I wanted to have all 180 colors. I just bought a second set of dark skin colors or I would have kept these. Luckily Amazon makes returns easy. Just bring them to an Amazon pick up depot & leave them in the assigned locker. The new pencils are already on their way & hopefully they are the correct set. If the pencils are as good as the other sets of Black Widows I own, I will change the rating to 5 stars. They are amazing. I’ve been using them for a year & my first pencils to get too short to sharpen were the dark skin set. Right now I’m taking two stars off for the manufacturer’s mistake & one star because Amazon did such a sucky job packaging them. WAX PENCILS ARE FRAGILE AMAZON! THE CORES CAN BREAK. ... show more

  • Awesome soft core pencils you’ll love
I want to give an honest review so others can make the best decisions on pencil choices.. First I’m just a regular person who bought the full set including skin tones & new monarch set.. A MUST OWN SET 🥰🥰 Honest -most people will find these workable and enjoyable no matter your level of artistic skill. A must own !!!! Onto pencils.... Whoever said these are soft like PRISMA premier are mistaken. ( these are soft but different in a good way) Not taking away from anyones comparison but they just are not as creamy. But they are buttery, smooth &!highly blendable they are a nice softness. So, don’t get me wrong these are GREAT but these are not in that super soft league of pencils. These fall in between Arteza, black widows and PRISMA level of softness and layering ability. I believe these are that perfect middle we strive for. BRIGHT & UNIQUE COLORS ARE AWESOME !!! These pencils do have a level of fantastic colors with rich pigment and they are a PERFECT SET OR addition to your PRISMA set or Arteza set or other wax based set. SOFTNESS/BLENDING/CORE STRENGTH The cores are a bit harder not in how they lay down but in how they handle, sturdy, will sharpen to a nice point and you can apply more pressure and still have the buttery lay down without breaking the lead or a huge wax bloom. I do notice some minor dusting but this is expected, it’s still a pencil after all :) Blending these was easy and easily blended with my PRISMA premier set and Arteza set they play very well with each other adding POP and depth to my Pictures... COST -THE BIGGEST POINT NEXT TO APPLICATION For around 120.00 you can get all of the tins including the skin tones - so these rank right up up there with PREMIUM PRICE but well worth it !! They do break these out in sets for affordability. So, you can buy sets as you go instead of all at once, which is a nice aspect. And each set is unique no repeat colors..🥰 The tins are nice but most of us don’t use these for long term we put them in easier access containers or cases. So if I were to suggest anything it would be ship these in a pencil case that holds all 144 colors and then sell replacement color family kits in tins. A thought . Maybe add a breakdown of colors for sale such as reds/browns, blues/grays etc.... replacement tins of color families would be great.. All in all I will keep these and see how they perform long term, I’m happy with the performance and softness These are right in that happy middle.. ... show more
