Description

Based on real-life events, Black Fury brings viewers deep into Depression hard times and into the heart of Joe Radek, a simple, hardworking coal miner used and thrown away by racketeers eager to muscle in on the unions. Paul Muni, who personified 1930s anguish as the doomed hero of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, makes Joe an unforgettable character: likeable, headstrong, too easily led and finally a towering force for justice as he takes on company goons single-handed. As sinewy and visceral as the overworked men it celebrates, Black Fury pulls no punches, which may explain why it was banned in Pennsylvania, the state where this classic from Casablanca director Michael Curtiz is set.

Love this movie. Owned it on VHS. Wanted it on disc. Deep historical meaning. My husbands auto body shop is nearby. His building was the bus garage used to take people to Pittsburgh. So you can see the film has deep meaning.

  • What's not to love about Muni?
This was a great historical movie...he (Muni) put a lot of work into the hero Reneck... a shame he didn't kiss her. She had to kiss him and even then it looked like she shocked the heck out of him. Very loveable and Karen Morely was great too. Hard to believe that they were in Scarface together...

  • accent like an accident
I bought this movie because I am a big fan of Paul Muni, however I found this movie to be a big disapointment. The one hurdle i couldn't get past was his accent.I know he is playing an immigrant and i suppose the director thought it an important aspect of the story, however I found it quiet annoying and very hard to understand the dialogue. The storyline itself was somewhat thin and drawnout, hardly worth suffering through Muni's inaudible accent.I really wanted to like this movie,as I had found it by accident and was anxious to enjoy a new found gem from the past.If you would like to see Paul Muni at his best ,I would recommend the following films,"I am a fugitive from a chain gang" "The good earth" "Angel on my shoulder" and "Scarface". ... show more
