Description

Beyond the Bars is the riveting story of how one man rose from the depths of “the hole” in prison, to the highs of the championship podium. As a young gang member Chris Luera was looking for a life of success and glory. He found near death experiences, and solitary confinement. In taut, dramatic prose he tells his story of life as a lost youth, who didn’t fit in, to finding his tribe on the gym floor, and becoming a champion. The family Chris Luera was born into was destroyed by drugs, alcohol and mysterious death. The family he was adopted into gave him love, a work ethic, and belief in his potential. Then came his third family. The calisthenics family helped him rebuild his life and his body, and set him on a new course of personal growth, success and seeing the world. In Beyond The Bars he shares how he was lost, and then found, through grace, grit and giving back. • Making you think about all aspects of your life and being grateful for the life we can have if we make better decisions. That you can change your life at ...
I have read many books but nothing of this caliber. It was frank and definitely had no filter what so ever, which is what makes this book genuine. It was well written and thought out. Many of us go throughout many crises, but this is a whole other level. Making you think about all aspects of your life and being grateful for the life we can have if we make better decisions. That you can change your life at any given moment if you want. That nothing is concrete and the only person stopping you is you! Your past does not define who you are but rather what life choices you make currently that does. We all have endeavors that are tiny or tremendous. Either let them go and move forward or dwell with anger that takes us to a path that leads to negativity. We can all learn something from this book. You don't have to be in the same situation but understand how things can become a slippery slow quickly with out realizing it until your too deep in it. There where many parts in the book that I could relate to and other parts I could not relate to but I was able to take many things from it. To be more mindful of my life, family, health and how negative people can bring you down instantly if you allow it. The book had me full of different emotions like a roller coaster and had me thinking of so many things in my life that helped me think about my own situations. I highly recommend this book but it is meant for many purposes. Not just for those who need help, but to understand other people in this world, to better your life, to always have hope, to work hard for what you want. stay creative, optimistic, push forward, dream and most important to stay bliss. ... show more

  • Made me wish my flight was longer...
Seriously. Here’s why... Recently I happened across an interview where author Chris Luera was speaking with Kerwin Rae on youtube. I thought Chris sounded interesting, so I downloaded the book, thinking I’d get to it when I had a spare moment. That moment came when I boarded a plane for an hour flight today. For the first time in my life, I was disappointed when the pilot announced that we’d be landing... I was so engrossed in this book. Major kudos to Chris, not only for being the inspirational human being that he is, but for not making himself any kind of glossy supervillain, or victim of circumstance for his life choices before. This is a candid account of a troubled path that leads to the building of a man who is strong, mentally and physically, and sees how his strength can serve others. My heart went out to Chris for his conversation with his old friend at the end of the book... there but for the grace... Redemption stories can sometimes be sickly reads; this one is anything but. I heartily recommend this book; it’s hard not to feel hopeful when you’ve read it. ... show more

  • Great book!
I read Chris’ book in 2 hours because I couldn’t put it down! “Beyond the Bars...” is a very real, very raw story of his life journey from beginning to where he is now. One of the things I respect the most is his honesty and acceptance of responsibility for the choices he made, both bad and good. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially for people who have kids/teens or work with youth who are struggling with their identity and aren’t making the best choices for their life. ... show more

Beyond The Bars is a great read, once you get started it’s really hard to put down. A very compelling read filled with the absolute lows and highs of life. A gritty and inspirational story that shows how fragile life can really be. From being so close to losing ones own life to finding his calling and traveling the world. A underdog story of passion, commitment, and love. A worthy book for any reader. ... show more

It's incredible to read a story like this, it really shows it's never too late to turn things around for the better. So cool to see someone go from spending 10 years in prison to thriving and growing so much as a person as well as an athlete. If you're reading this Amazon review, you really should buy the book and give it a read! Glad I did. ... show more

  • Beyond Motivation and Inspiration
I picked TS up being a calisthenics enthusiast myself but was blown away by Chris's story and the emotional content behind every word. It's been a long time since I struggled to put a book down and this one certainly captivated me. I can't recommend it highly enough.
