  • Quality of Sound
Even to my 84-year-old ears the sound of this headset is remarkable. I listen almost exclusively to classical music, and the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro is jaw dropping. Also, I received the order three days before the scheduled arrival date, so that pleased me as well.

  • I cherish these headphones and their incredibly clear and wide soundstage
My Setup: AMP: Schiit Magni 3+ DAC: Modi 3+ (Great introductory AMP & DAC combo that will do these headphones justice. I would recommend this setup, its equivalent, or something better to get the best out of these headphones.) FREQUENCY RESPONSE Anyone who is familiar with Beyerdynamic will know that their frequency response piques around 7-8 kHz. As a result, most headphone reviewers will note that it can be fatiguing or outright annoying for some treble-sensitive people. I've also heard that Beyerdynamic fixed this in the 990s, I believe. Regardless, I've found that the treble response provides those crisp claps and hi-hats that I'm looking for. I wouldn't recommend these headphones for heavy metal because they'd be incredibly fatiguing. However, I listen to bedroom pop, indie music, and orchestral/symphonic music, and it's incredible for those genres. BUILD The build quality is exceptional and the two types of earpads provide a different experience, which I appreciate. However, these aren't the kind of headphones you should expect to be comfortable after 2-3 hours of listening. That gorgeous metal build is also heavy. That, combined with the treble pique, makes these exhausting after long listening periods. I'm comparing this to my Sennheiser 6XX headphones, which I can listen to all day long with absolutely no ear fatigue or head pain - they're the most comfortable headphones around and the 1990s can't compare in that respect. If you're realistic about how long you can use these headphones for, this won't be a problem for you. SOUNDSTAGE Back to the soundstage, I want to use the Sennheiser 6XX as a comparison again. When you put the 1990 pros on, you'll immediately notice that everything is clear. You're in the room with this music, no doubt. I try to wear the 6XX first, then go to the 1990s because, otherwise, I will be disappointed when I put the 6XX on. It can't compare to the soundstage in the slightest. If you want to prove this to yourself, find some HQ ambient bird/city/rain sounds etc. I find myself looking over my shoulder because I'm convinced I've heard something behind me. Amazing. OVERALL I'm so satisfied with these headphones. I can't explain to you how much I love them. I'm planning on marrying them. If you're not too treble-sensitive and if you're prepared to use these for shorter listening sessions, they're one of the best headphones in this price bracket. And they're beautiful, no doubt. Buy them. Per iod. ... show more

  • Massive upgrade
I used Audio Technica M50x closed backs on many of my mixes coupled with Yamaha monitors that made radio play for three years. I mention that to say that I can mix with anything and was just upgrading b/c the timing was right and was looking for an edge. I’m blown away at the drastic difference in detail that these cans have in comparison to what I was using. I read that the 1990 headphones are what you want if you’re planning to mix b/c your room isn’t conducive to mixing primarily with monitors. I can see why people say that. Highly recommend and they were shipped timely and had a case and straight and coiled detachable sturdy cables. Worth the cost. Not overly warm or bright. They seem flat without coloration which is ideal. Stoked! ... show more

  • The Bass!!!
As an owner of Beyerdynamic 990 Pros and Sennheiser 600s I can definitely attest to quality of the 1990. A step up in both build quality and sound quality. The detachable cables are nice too. Most noticeable to me is the bass. Deep but not boomy. Much better than anything I have owned before. The mids are a bit recessed, and I don't notice any treble harshness. Neutral but exciting, especially when the bass drum hits. I am currently listening to highly dynamic symphonic music plugged into my Mac Pro. I don't notice any problems, and it gets plenty loud. A real amp is better, but there really is no problem with the laptop. Build quality and comfort are great. I loved my 990 Pros for many years, and these feel very similar on my head, and in my ears. Just a step up. ... show more

  • These headphones made me clean my ears!
I’m by no means a professional producer. However I’ve always had an ear for quality and knew that there was more to hear than what my previous headphones could offer. I wanted open-back for the wider soundstage and immersion when not doing audio work. (Movies, Games) I wanted an analytical response curve to be able to better judge my mixes. And most importantly, I wanted them to be comfortable. Full ear coverage was a must, and I still wanted them to provide a good seal considering my Glasses’s arm. Gotta see what I’m doing sadly. These headphones delivered on all of that and more. Let’s start with the unboxing and keep it brief. You feel like you paid your money when you open them up. The case it comes in will protect your investment, and the cable choices are both great lengths. (Coiled, and straight.) The connection type used is Mini-xlr which made me extremely happy for the ease of replacement once these give out. My one gripe? Maybe could’ve been a braided cable. You spend over half a grand on them. It just would’ve completed the experience but again, You can get your own. Let’s move on to build quality. These headphones are built sturdy and to last. The frame being made of metal. (Don’t site me, but I believe aluminum) makes them cold to the touch when you first put them on. While also not weighing your head down after extended use. You won’t be disappointed with the headband or ear pads either, they are soft to the touch and made of a breathable fabric to keep your head from warming up. The band gives good flex enough to fit everyone’s varying head shape I’ve made try these. And all who have comment on just how surprisingly light they are. Sound quality it is. These like I wrote in the title, made me clean my ears, and continue to do so. I just had to be sure I wasn’t leaving anything else on the table after how much I was missing before. Listening to these is an experience like no other. The bass just encompasses. I don’t know another word to use there. It seems to just be, instead of being produced. The same can be said about the mids. There’s just something other worldly about how well the separation is. Voices come through like the person is in the same room with you, and for the gamers out there. You won’t ever take these off just due to the advantage you get. It’s honestly unfair. The higher frequencies are wonderful as well but come with a very slight draw back. They can almost be too sharp at the higher volumes. But at that point, you are already too loud to begin with. It just sounds like they needed to be tamed a bit more when optimizing the curve of these. Nothing major though. The sound stage of where these frequencies all reside though, is just a new level of expansive. You know it’s an issue when watching a movie that involves any kind of footsteps or door knocks makes you need to pause it to be sure it’s not your own environment. It’s become a challenge to wear “the headphones” and play horror survival titles. Because it’s just all too real. I can’t stress enough just how wide and expansive these headphones are. It’s a new world. All in all, this is a purchase that I’d be happy to make again and recommend. If you can find them for the magical $450 I’ve heard about. Jump on it. It’s fully worth the $600. So anything less is just highway robbery. Your music will thank you, your ears will thank you, and you will thank you for the listening experience you have every time you put these on. That’s just what it is, an experience. If you are at the coin flip stage of getting these or not. Just do it. I don’t know you, but I can promise you won’t regret it. However you may need to upgrade your audio setup, 250 ohms isn’t a light task. The integrated motherboard audio controller just won’t cut it. But you should’ve done that a while ago anyways. Better latency and more utility. ... show more
