  • One of the best I have tried...
Style: 32" 4K Calibrated Pantone Design Monitor...
The BenQ PD3200U monitor was purchased after experimenting with others like the VIOTEK GN32DA 32-Inch which was dismal, yielding grainy text and ghosting even at 144Mhz. I needed a graphic design business monitor (Adobe and Office apps) that also could double as a game monitor for the Battlefield franchise, namely game "V" at the time of this post. I use Windows 10, therefore, I will provide a few pointers on setup. Click Settings > Ease of Access > Display and slide the "Make text bigger" to 120% which will increase the file names and menus throughout Windows to an easier to read size when in native 3840 x 2160 resolution. The Scale and layout will automatically adjust to 150% for text, apps and other items. With the BenQ PD3200U monitor set at full resolution, browsers will need to be changed to 120% for the best reading size. I use Firefox, so I added the extension "Fixed Zoom" and set at 120% for all pages. I also had to open Outlook, click View > View Settings > Other Settings changing fonts to 10 pt. Segoe UI. Outlook 2016 and 2019 will require folder by folder font adjustments mentioned above ( I would assume the same for 365). As far as color accuracy, the factory settings were just fine out of the box. However, if you find the native 3840 x 2160 is just impossible to work with visually, which I did where I am not a CAD/CAM user, there is a solution. You will need to right mouse click on desktop and choose Nvidia > Display > Change resolution and select the BenQ monitor. Click the "Customize..." button and accept the risk warning. Click "Create Custom Resolution..." button and enter 16:9 safe aspect ration of Horizontal pixels: 2880 and Vertical lines: 1620 which will use the full wide of the screen. Click test and quickly click save settings. Scroll up to the Custom setting of 2880 x 1620 and select and then click apply. The reason for this is Nvidia drivers assume a 30" monitor, therefore it doesn't include the needed resolution. Once completed, the Firefox browser no longer needs the "fixed zoom". Reset to 100% and delete. Click Settings > Ease of Access > Display and slide the "Make text bigger" to 120% and Make everything bigger, the size should be set to 125%. The other setting was the Outlook font to 9 pt. instead of 10 pt. Segoe UI mentioned above. Your screen now views like a 1920 x 1080 monitor, only at a much better resolution. Don't forget to adjust ClearType, a detail often overlooked. Type "ClearType" in Windows search and go through each selection panel to choose the easiest font to read after the above is completed. When done, you will have a crisp 1920 x 1080 legibility at 3840 x 2160 resolution for most of your desktop experience, except for Windows user panels like save files and transfer files. I also changed from 8bpc (24bits per pixel RGB 4:2:0) to 10bpc (30bits per pixel RGB 4:4:4) for maximum color control for the Adobe Suite. (With an AMD Radeon, their drivers limit 10bpc at YCbCr 4:2:2 in many cases). You can make this adjustment from the Nvidia Control Panel > Display > Change resolution > Use NVIDIA color settings and Output color depth: dropdown. 10bpc and HDR are one and the same. This will not affect games, where anything DX9 compliant or later has to render pixels in 24-bit floating-point per channel. Note: My screen showed a glowing bluish area on the right at 10bpc, so I reverted to 8bpc when creating the 2880 x 1620 resolution which helped. About THE game challenge with this monitor, I purchased an EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 XC video card to first assure I had all the rendering capability as possible. You will want to buy a UV001 10ft Gold Plate 4K Resolution cable, where the cables that come with the monitor are baseline and short. The monitor's maximum 60Hz refresh rate is understandably a concern. Ideally, 144Hz is optimal for current games however, I have yet to find a monitor that provides crisp production text with 100% RGB colors, 144Hz refresh, and G-sync or FreeSync. Using NVIDIA’s 441.66 graphics drivers at the time of this test, I found Battlefield V played great at GeForce Experience using optimal settings which is mostly 'ultra' resolution overall, DXR Raytracing at medium. The details were insane, too much really where you could identify designer errors in the games wireframes. In the game, I maintained ultra settings but dropped the resolution to 1920 x 1080. Super sharp gameplay without any GPU strain :) All the other high demand games I tried played fine as well. The menu puck is simply amazing when it comes to quick changes or user preference presets. The additional connector ports and the ability to connect two CPU's to the monitor is a big plus since I also repair laptops and desktops. I was able to remove my 8 port 3.0 USB hub and use the monitor ports for mouse and USB utility cables. The speakers that come with the monitor are located on the back and sound like large tin cans, meaning adding speakers or a headset is a must. Long story short, this monitor is super sharp and accurate for video and media production while providing all I need for weekend game nights. It is a very fussy monitor to set up correctly, but I am happy with it after all the effort! ... show more

  • Nice entry into more serious graphic/photo/video monitor for work and hobby with 4K
Style: 27" 4K Calibrated Pantone Design Monitor
My original intent was to acquire a monitor where I can both playback and stream UHD (4K) content on a respectable sized desktop monitor. I did some research on 27" monitors and found for the price per specs, the BENQ was hard to beat. The specs are made clear as are various reviews from printed word to videos (youtube etc.). At present, I have an older Macbook Pro (hooked up and a higher end streamer - NVidia Shield TV that can stream 4K and also play 4K files). For those looking for handling or being HDR aware, this monitor fits the bill. However I cannot call it a real HDR monitor simply because it falls short of the HDR specs in brightness range. What it does do is handle HDR media files with ease and makes them more than presentable. For those starting out with video, you may find this either a good entry or just shy of a good entry. From a photo PoV, this is not a bad monitor at all. It has a couple of the colour spaces that are popular with some photographers and a very close match when the printer too is calibrated to match with the monitor. This monitor uses soft calibration which means information reside on the computer side and it adjusts the monitor accordingly. Higher end graphic monitors are literally hardware/firmware adjusted. I can easily recommend this monitor as a great starting point for an avid hobbyist who is considering printing images. The catch of course is a good tool to calibrate is require and those are easy enough to find. Consider Spyder 5, ColorMunki and i1 Display. The have their own tiers of quality as well. The lower right has the basic controls for the monitor and they are very easy to navigate. Add to this some PiP, a way to see how HDR is compared to without (their adjustment) and more rounds the controls off into likeable interaction when needed. The screen itself is a "thin matte" as in no serious reflections yet it doesn't seem to appear "flat and less sharp" which often can happen with more heavily matted screens. I call this a serious plus. The frame around the screen is fairly narrow which is please to the eye and only the bottom is a touch wider to of course get the BENQ name out but not loudly. What I really like is the stand which is easy enough to get the screen attached and is quite robust and sturdy. The top of the stand creates an opening so that one's hand can fit in as if it were a handle and the monitor moved about easily and safely (assuming one is careful). Though the screen can rotate 90 degrees to go from horizontal to vertical, I have no use for this and I wish that this monitor somewhat had a "click into place" or similar to note when the screen has met the vertical and horizontal position. The latter is just a want item but not really a problem at all. Gaming - let's face it, there are many many monitors out there that are for those that "feel the need for speed" and that is not this monitor. However, it does do well with certain medium to moderate requirements games so some may love the 4K facet and the colour (as there is a setting for a game like profile for this monitor which is saturated and contrasty). If your gaming needs are moderate and you do art or similar, this could do the trick. Audio - like many monitors today they either have no speakers or small mediocre speakers. This monitor has the latter. The audio is not bad but a screen of this size and beauty deserve a more serious consideration for audio to match. They will do in a pinch but don't expect bass, super clarity or pure treble sound. The monitor has a typical small jack out for headphones/speakers. Save time when connecting cables. The monitor comes with some useful cables and they are fairly well made (or rather wont break at the plug ends like some cheap versions). The location of the port/plugs on the monitor face downward and I find the easiest way to plug the cables in is to rotate the screen so that the ports are now to the side. Make sure if you desire, to run the cable through the "hole" in the vertical stand for easy cable management. Because there is USB, some are different than others in function so be sure to use the correct port based on function. I don't know if any of the above helps anyone but make sure to see all the specs, along with bells and whistles and if this is the right size monitor. If your space is shallow, 27" might be too large. If you have a work area with depth, you may want to consider a 32" monitor and BENQ also makes this in the larger size. ... show more

  • Good monitor for a good price
Style: 27" 4K Calibrated Pantone Design Monitor
I've been using this monitor for more than a year now and I can say that it's a very good monitor, almost great but couple of minor flaws don't let me call it that way. It is my first 4k monitor, previously I used only FullHD ones. But when I switched to MacBooks from windows laptops, I realized that MacBook + FullHD monitor is a shitty combination because of difference in picture quality. MacBooks have retina screens with high resolution and ppi. That's why I started to look for a 4K monitor which will play nicely with my MacBook and finally decided to purchase BenQ PD2700U. Pros: - great picture quality - not expensive - good build quality - a lot of ports on the back Cons: - it's heavy - monitor stand is big and takes a lot of space on your table and if you don't have a deep table, consider purchasing a monitor arm - speakers are abysmal (this is expected, almost all monitor speakers sound like garbage) - don't have a usb-c cable included (you need to purchase an extra usb-c to hdmi or usb-c to display port cable, if you want to connect it to a MacBook) Overall it was a good experience and I noticed that my productivity increased when I started using a big monitor with good picture quality. I recommend this monitor to anyone who is looking for a not expensive 4K monitor with great picture quality. ... show more
