  • Lots of useful info
Format: Paperback
I was hoping for something more beginner-ish. Something I could do while lying in bed maybe. Maybe there’s no such thing with oil pastels. Lots of useful info here. Surfaces and surface prep - acrylic and watercolor wash. (One of the reasons I chose oil pastels was to avoid paints, prep, messes and cleanups. Who knows, maybe these things are unavoidable.). Techniques are covered. The techniques look relatively straightforward. A couple involve solvents and an encaustic iron. Mixed media is covered. Then there are projects. All but one of the projects involve acrylic or watercolor paint. One uses an iron. A few use some type of board for the surface. The one project that is just pastels is an animal portrait which is not something I wanted to try. Mounting and storage covered too. If you’re really into pastels and are have the time, it’s probably a great beginner book for you. If you were looking for a less involved hobby that’s not too much work at the end of the day, this isn’t the right book, keep looking. ... show more

  • Best beginner’s guide to learning to use oil pastels
Format: Paperback
This is the best guide to painting with oil pastels. I own two other books on oil pastels and this one is by far the absolute best. Oil pastel is not easy to master and this book has been very helpful in improving my command of it.

  • Print Replica Format Destroys The Value Of The Book
I would love to have a copy of this book in traditional Kindle format. But I hate print replica format. It makes the book too hard to read. Each half page has to be manually resized on my Kindle to make it fit the screen and large enough to read. I really wish Amazon would do away with Print Replica Format. I see a lot of Search Press art books I would like but I will not buy them because they are print replica format which I hate. I wish I could exchange this book for the same book in traditional Kindle format. It is a good book, but takes ages to read and adjust individual pages. Not worth the effort and it tires me out. Great book but I hate the print replica format. It is too hard to make the pages readable! ... show more
