I've been buying Bates for years because they're very good boots that last a long time. The one thing I haven't liked with previous Bates boots is the first open eyelet that is out of line with others and always made it difficult to tighten the laces. These Sport 2 boots improved that alignment a lot. And these boots are lighter. They're maybe an inch shorter than others, but they still offer great ankle support. One other thing I've noticed recently is a lot of boots and shoes have very poor craftsmanship. The leather is cut too short to the sole and filled in with marker. That was not at all the case with these boots. Maybe that was a COVID production thing. I hope so. It's premature for me to comment on durability because I just bought them, but I looked them over thoroughly, and they seem to be made and stitched just like all my other Bates pairs. The others are still wearable. These things last forever. You obviously eventually wear down the treads, but it takes a while.

I wish someone had posted this before I bought them. Or at least in the item description / pics. The thing I love most about side zip boots is the ease of putting them on / taking them off. Just open the zipper and the boot flays open with more than enough room to slide the foot in / out without ever needing to untie the laces. Well, that's not the case with these boots. There is a fabric flap that connects both sides of the boot, so when you unzip it all the way, it does NOT fully open to allow room for your foot to slide in. You would still need to tie / untie them on every use. I guess the flap allows a little more room to wedge your foot in, but you definitely aren't just slipping these on / off like most side zip boots. Aside from that, they are super comfortable. Bates is the gold standard of work boots. I work in a school setting, so I walk on concrete floors all day, and Bates feels like I'm wearing sneakers.

I have worn this particular brand of boots almost every day for 1 Year and 2 Months. Through work and daily wear, bartending, cooking, serving, hiking, camping, yard work, etc.. I have worn them primarily for work in the food and beverage industry which is a lot of time on your feet and these boots have been adequately comfortable through long 12 hour shifts repetitively. They are non slip which is a must and really held out until about 3 months ago with the seems giving out. If you’re familiar with that kind of work 40+ hours a week you know they’ve been through tough shifts. The soles of my old boots are still really good and I plan on taking them to a cobbler and continue to wear them for work while using this new pair for regular everyday wear. I liked them so much I bought them again.

Pros: very comfortable, not great but decent slip resistance, bates makes the best side zips Cons: the stitching is horrible everywhere, only lasted 9 months, very non water resistant. Can not recommend.

Only 3E wide boots I could find to fit my wide Fred Flintstone feet. But, put them on zipped and laced up and they fit great. You got to have a little wiggle room for your toes even in a new pair of boots that you're having to break in. If you don't have that little bit of wiggle room, those boots are going to make your life miserable for a little bit. Be prepared for blisters and buy yourself some moleskin. I wish that AR 670-1 would have allowed these types of boots to be worn as a part of the uniform when I was still in. They'll definitely get put to the test in a couple months hunting turkeys in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. But I will carry an extra pair like always just in case they take a crap.

Truly horrible design, the plastic shoelace holders on the outside protrude and so the shoelace holders dig into your Achilles Heel. Very painfully worn but I had to stop wearing them due to bone damage. It was actually digging into my nerves, excruciating pain feeling because of this boot design. Boot designer should get fired. These boots are not wearable.
