Description

Stop Bamboo in its Tracks! Bamboo Shield is a diversion type control method with a smooth surface on the side facing your bamboo planting. It is made from HDPE, high-density polyethylene. Superior to metals because it will not rust and easier to install. Bamboo roots typically travel in the first 12-18 inches of topsoil. Bamboo Shield is sold in 24", 30", and 36" depths to provide extra protection from stray growth. The polyethylene barrier is made from post industrial recycled regrind material when possible, in the USA. Bamboo Shield is impermeable to water as well which acts as a water barrier. Plastic thinner than 30 mil has been shown to crack when ground temperatures get below -15 degrees F. This would be extremely cold and the thickness greater than 30 mil does great at handling very cold temperatures without damage. The plastic barrier has a better chance not cracking when frozen like other materials. Even concrete will freeze and crack over the years. Driveways are poured 4 to 6 inches deep to allow heavy vehicles passage and parking. Seldom are driveways seen without cracks. Concrete was used many years ago (Byron Agriculture Station in Byron, Georgia) as a below ground barrier system and found to crack below the frost line allowing bamboo rhizomes to emerge through to the other side. One of the many myths of bamboo is its ability to crack solid concrete. Bamboo is not magical, but persistent and its root system will eventually find cracks in concrete and emerge through them. If the environment (sunlight soil) is suitable once it emerges the bamboo will grow if not terminated. The rhizome (root) when growing is very soft and flexible and will always turn when it encounters something harder.

  • Worth renting a trench digger
Very sturdy. Digging the trench for this was rough. Probably should have rented a machine for that part.

  • Much Sturdier Than Anticipated!
Material Type: 24 inch deep x 60 mil thick Size: 30 feet
Works great!!! It's MUCH stiffer and sturdier than I thought! I don't know why I thought it would be thinner like tarp, but it's more like a thick plastic board.

  • Very sturdy tree root protection
Material Type: 36 inch deep x 100 mil thick Size: 20 feet
I purchased this to protect my home's foundation. My avocado tree has grown to a height of six or seven meters, and its roots had already heaved up the paving stones surrounding it. To safeguard the house, I cut back some of the thickest roots and installed this protective barrier. The material is quite thick—it looks very sturdy and possesses excellent durability. ... show more

  • High Quality Products
Material Type: 24 inch deep x 60 mil thick Size: 55 feet
I have been buying products from Lewis Bamboo since 2012. The barrier works well at protecting one's yard from "invasion " I have found it thick and durable. The issue is not the barrier but the installation most times. I have had rhizones jump the barrier (grow up outside the barrier) in a few places but it was due to how the barrier was installed (tree root in the path of the barrier, etc ) that caused the barrier not to be as secure. I simply checked the area outside the barrier twice a year and could easily cut the rhizomes and stop to growth. The bamboo was relatively easy to maintain with good installation of a great barrier. Lewis Bamboo was great in providing a lot of instruction on installing bamboo. Very pleased with my investment in a living fence ... show more

  • Block Intrusive Sabal Palm Roots
I bought this material to block intrusive two Sabal Palm root systems. I replaced older landscape plantings with caladiums last May. The caladiums flourished until September when they started to fail. I had excavated some of the palm trees roots but obviously not enough. The roots had grown under the mulch and over the bulbs causing the bulbs not to be able to send new growth upwards. The palms were planted in 1981 and are about 20-25 feet tall. I have just about finished cutting and digging out roots down to an 18" depth and out up to 6 ft from base of trees - no small feat. I plan to cut the Bamboo shield to put around the trunks about 12" off the trunk at a depth of 18". Once that is done I will replant about 100+ caladium bulbs that I dug up and hope they grow. The palm tree roots appear to grow out and down for the most part so I hope the Bamboo shield works to keep the roots deep under ground. Not sure if cutting all this tree root matting will damage the trees but they are larger than I would like so if I lose them I won't be too upset. ... show more
