Yes, it is made of vinyle, and it was packed very well with two cardboard inserts, one on each side, so as to prevent you from cutting the mat when you use an utensil to open the box. The mat only weighs 5 LBs, which is nice for mobility. I am older, and this mat provides me with the right amount of support during my stretch excercises. I also lay it on top of my queen size bed and work from there, which works very well for me. The mat folds very easily and has the two handles for transport. My son was doing a stunt and was afraid of landing on the hard floor. The mat was easy enough to carry around and set up. Also, all of my kids practice their tumbling on the mat. I even noticed them using it to sleep on when having sleepovers. So far tears or noticeable damage. No complaints here
