I read and listened to this book as we were in the midst of getting our son’s autism diagnosis and it was life changing. It saved me and felt like a breath of fresh air and direction on our journey that had absolutely no guide book or map. I don’t know if I would have come out of our diagnosis journey the way I did without this book. The lived experience of parents and children navigating the most unexpected journey of Autism is often overlooked and is very under documented. These three moms tell it with such grace, wit, and love that it makes the book hard to put down. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I felt every emotion in between. Most importantly, I felt empowered and less alone on my journey. I purchased copies for loved ones who care for my son as well and recommend it to anyone and everyone, regardless of if you have a child in your life with special needs. Austim Out Loud caught my attention by the carefully chosen beautiful picture and the elegantly embossed lettering on the cover. Quality, cooperation between the 3 authors all with sons diagnosed with vastly different levels on the autism spectrum alongside comorbidities. Each author contributing her story to each chapter. Words. Words carefully chosen but with gut-punching honesty. Even if you, your family or friends have escaped the life of an autism family. This book will envelope all your cells in being able to relate in one strand or another. Marriage, raising kiddos, death, estrangement. LIFE!     • Recommend reading regardless if you can relate or not.

This book was recommended to me by my best friend who has a child with autism. It was recommended to her entire friend’s list, so not to just me directly, but I didn’t hesitate to buy it. I’m a single male with no children of my own, and this book is extremely eye-opening. It helped me truly realize what these mothers go through, including my friend, even though I haven’t personally witnessed the bad moments and the hard battles. I’ve only seen the moments that would make me believe nothing was wrong. I could never begin to know what it’s like to sacrifice one’s life to solely care for a child, let alone a child with special needs. I’d never pretend to know. So this book gave me a glimpse into the lives of three strangers and their families and it didn’t take long to be hooked. They told each of their life’s journey with so much honesty that it made me really feel for what they’ve been going through, and will forever continue to go through. It helped me understand my friend more, when I didn’t think that there was more to know. These women said they wish they had a manual or a book like this in the early stages when they were feeling lost and alone, and this book works for multiple audiences. Not only a parent in their situation, but literally anybody with a heart that has room to care and learn about something that doesn’t involve them directly. I know that I’ll take extra care when dealing with strangers in the world who maybe seem frustrating on the surface, but now being more considerate to the battles their waging on the inside or behind closed doors. I feel I always have, but even more so. It takes a lot for them to interact with the outside world, so the least I can do is be patient with them. I’m glad this book exists not only for the parent or guardian of a child with autism, but glad it exists for anyone who has a child or knows a child. Buying this book is like receiving three books for the price of one. There are three authors with three completely different stories about their sons on the autistic spectrum. This book is not just for people with autism in their families. I have personally been places, and experienced children and adults displaying behaviors that I simply did not understand. After reading this book, I have a much better perception of how people on the spectrum may behave differently than what is considered "normal." These authors have poured their hearts into allowing us to have a glimpse into their worlds of raising their neurodiverse children. Their children are every bit as lovable as their neurotypical children. They can be smart, happy, loving, stubborn, clingy, funny and have the same characteristics as their neurotypical siblings. The authors have written how having a child with autism in the family changes the entire family's ability to function in every day life. For instance, they cannot all decide to go to dinner and a movie. There is much more planning that the family must tackle before they can go out into the community. I give a great deal of respect to all of these families. I have learned so much about autism by reading this book. This is such a great read for anybody wanting to better themselves by gaining knowledge about people with whom we are coexisting in this wonderful world of ours. I hope to never stop learning, and these ladies have enlightened me more than they will ever know. Wow I'm only a little over 100 pages in and I had to stop and write this. I can't recommend this book enough! As a father with an autistic daughter ( different set of circumstances than the book), but still highly relatable in some area's, gave me tidbits of information that was highly useful, particularly in the stories. There will be one sentence that just gets to me emotionally and will answer a question or quell a feeling I've had. It's one of those books that I cannot stop reading, or will make time to read. It is so relatable along with other books I've read that deal specifically with girls who unfortunately for a long time were not believed to be able to have autism. Amazing. The chapter on anxiety was so much needed. It may not say it all but it sure said enough. Zero disappointment in buying this book-Quote:" Research tells us anxiety is an emotion, often characterized by inner turmoil, dread, and the expectation of a future event. It is not the same as fear, because fear is the response to a real, actual event. It eats him from the inside out. This is what research and science don't tell you. They don't explain the way anxiety is a fire that burns around the clock, demanding all the air in the room until you can hardly breath." ... show more
