  • Feature-Rich, Cosmetically-Imaculate, Everything you want in a Motherboard
Style: Dark Hero|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
From the moment I opened the box, this thing has amazed me. Its beautiful. Easy to install. Built-in IO panel (so you don't forget when installing, have to take it out, and do it again). Amazing LED screen that you can customize. Tons of space for M.2's and more! I'm in love and hope I can keep this bad boy for ages! ... show more

  • A wonderful motherboard with great features, but DDR 5 memory support is still spotty.
Style: Hero|WiFi 6E Pattern: Motherboard
I upgraded my PC from a Z590 Hero to this Z790 Hero, and I couldn't be more pleased... except for the lack of broad DDR 5 memory support. I tried a 4-stick 128GB Kingston DDR 5 Kit that was supposedly supported but found it very unstable. I fell back to a 2-stick 64GB Corsair kit that has been rock-solid. Otherwise, the board has many wonderful features and is easy to use. The BIOS is easy to work with and has its own manual you must read before you start your build. Certain defaults aren't trivial, and I've seen many folks freak out in the ASUS forum and blame ASUS for it. Not so! I highly recommend this motherboard. One caveat: installing Windows 11 needs attention, as the 22H2 USB doesn't contain the required LAN drivers, effectively stopping the installation. You need to prepare a separate USB stick with the drivers you can download from the ASUS site and load them during installation. Disclaimer: I am receiving a warranty extension from ASUS for my feedback. ... show more

  • ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero has serious 128GB RAM issues and works only with 2 memory slots occupied
Style: Hero|WiFi 6E Pattern: Motherboard
It is strange that everybody here at Amazon reviews is praising this ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero motherboard, but only 2 people mentioned that it has 128GB RAM problems. I wish that I knew about this issue before buying this motherboard. This motherboard runs well and without issues with 64GB RAM using a pair of 32GB RAM modules (G.Skill Trident Z5, Kingston Fury Beast, etc.), but has 128GB RAM stability issues and problems, and even Kingston Fury Beast RGB Black 128GB (4x32GB) is failing MemTest86 as a full set, regardless of being listed in ASUS QVL for 128GB RAM usage. It looks that ASUS was in a hurry to release this next generation motherboard and didn’t even bother to test it completely for stability at full 128GB RAM capacity, which they claim this motherboard has, but in reality – it doesn’t and it can’t work with full 128GB RAM, i.e. with all 4 memory slots occupied. So, for all those extremely happy customers who are running 64GB RAM and praising this motherboard – good luck upgrading it to 128GB RAM, because you are going to need it. Unless somebody wants to have the same issues and headaches attempting to run 128GB RAM with this motherboard, I advise you to stay away from Z790 series, regardless of what ASUS technical support would say regarding BIOS updates, because they aren’t going to solve it, according to my husband. What a shame that ASUS misrepresented their product and in doing so forced my family to waste our time and money on this defective motherboard. ... show more

  • A bit too expensive for the features
Style: Hero|WiFi 6E Pattern: Motherboard
For the most part this is a great motherboard, and it **** well better be at a $600 price point. Tons of thunderbolt, usb-c,usb 3 ports, wired antenna (though they switched to a much easier to use wifi antenna on the model immediately after this), great XMP support, same Asus bios as expected, Armory Crate and AI Suite are great (though for some reason AI Suite doens't work when Memory Protection is turned on), TPM support, 4 NVME connectors but that's where things start to suck. The only PCIE5 NVME slots "on" this board are actually on the PCIE expansion card, which is a complete waste for anyone who intends to use anything besides a GPU given there are only two PCIE slots. I cannot stress this enough - if you have any intention of using the onboard Intel Bluetooth adapter, you have to use the wifi antenna provided. The bluetooth adapter is absolute garbage without it. It took 3 hours of trying to understand why the connection was barely functional compared to a USB adapter with no antenna and thats why. Antenna is not optional. This motherboard will also cause tons of kernel crashes and other hardware IRQ issues until you finally install all the drivers and Windows updates, so good luck with that. ... show more

  • An elegant beautiful beast of a Motherboard
Style: Dark Hero|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
Having over 30 years experience and over 1000 custom PC builds in my background, this will be my final build for myself. I chose the ASUS Z790 Dark Horse primarily for it stable and reliable power handling and it's onboard NVME M.2 capacity. Coupled with an Intel i9-14900K, cooled with a Corsair H150i Elite liquid cooler, 64 Gb of G.Skill DDR-5 ram, a WD 4Tb SN-850X M.2, an Asus ROG Strix 4070 OC, Powered by an Asus ROG Thor 1200W PS, and living in a Cooler Master HAF Evo 700 case, running Windows 11 Pro. As a gamer/Data Scientist/Programmer/Tinker I believe this Motherboard has checked all the marks for reliability, performance, and just plain awesomeness!! My only qualm and reason for only 4-stars is lack of, or difficulty in finding information in the manuals which I feel would be of use to someone without the benefit of an extensive background in PC/Computer construction/repair. With patience and Google all of the info is available but a full build like this could be daunting to a beginner. But the reward and satisfaction for this build, based on the ASUS MAXIMUS Z790 Dark Hero is difficult to overstate. ... show more
