Lightweight Beginner Telescope
This is a functional beginner telescope for well below $100. With a focal length of 400mm, the two included Kellner eyepieces give you magnifications of 20x with the 20mm eyepiece, and 40x with the 10mm. The included 3x Barlow lets you push the magnification to 120x with the 10mm eyepiece, still below this telescope's theoretical maximum of 140x. I like the 90 degree diagonal because it makes observation of objects high up in the sky more comfortable. It provides an upright image, so this telescope can also be used for daytime observation. From my fairly light-polluted backyard (Bortle 6), I could catch some nice views of the moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. At 20x, Jupiter was a bright disc with its four Galilean moons visible as sharp points of light; at 40X, two bands were visible on the planet itself. Saturn's rings were visible at 40x. Looking at the Moon let me see many smaller craters and larger surface features, but it also strained my eyes because the kit does not include a moon filter to cut the brightness. Bright objects (Moon and Jupiter) have a halo from chromatic aberration, but that is to be expected for entry-level telescopes. The finder scope is barely serviceable with its tiny aperture of 20mm and the need to almost press your eyeball against it to look through and see the crosshairs. It sits on a thin, flexible plastic strut that flexes under even the lightest touch. Focusing is touchy for two reasons: 1. The focus knobs are fairly small, making fine adjustment difficult. 2. The AZ mount and tripod flex easily and are moving at the slightest touch. The tripod feet are hard plastic and slide on hard surfaces. I had to relocate from the deck to the lawn so the whole telescope wouldn't shift when aiming at a target, switching eyepieces, or focusing. Even then you have to hold down the tripod head with one hand while making adjustments, or the thing moves on you. Fully extended for comfortable viewing (I am 6'1"), the tripod is very flexible, too. It takes a lot of patience and gentle manipulation to get enjoyable views with this setup. The carry bag that can hold the entire kit is a good feature. It has velcro straps inside to keep the telescope and tripod from sloshing around. For a few dollars more, there are other 70 or 80mm aperture refractors on Amazon that give you a less shaky user experience. ... show more

Surprisingly good optics, but invest in a tripod.
I'm going to give you "budget telescope" folks a bit of really good advice. Whatever budget telescope you use, invest in a good quality (read: sturdy) tripod and a GEAR DRIVE HEAD. There is no better friend to a budget telescope (or someone interested in astrophotography) than a gear drive head on a quality tripod. That advice certainly applies here to this scope, as a quality tripod and gear drive head makes it quite a usable instrument. I was lucky enough to get this on Oct. 30, which was a rare clear night in northern Ohio. I unboxed it, took a look at the included tripod (perhaps better than some I've seen) and put it back in the box. I got my Promaster carbon fiber tripod out (equipped with a Benro gear drive head) and slapped this little scope on top. Grabbed the 2 eyepieces (a 10 and 20mm) along with my Neewer eyepiece set and headed outside. The first thing I noted was that the spotting scope was WAY off from the scope focal point. But at least it got me "in the neighborhood" and allowed me to find my target. It was almost 10 pm, and Jupiter was high in the eastern sky, and would make a PERFECT target for testing the optics of this little scope. I put the 20mm eyepiece on, got Jupiter in the frame and got focused in. I was rewarded with an absolutely beautiful view of Jupiter and 3 of the Galilean moons came perfectly into focus. Io, Callista, and Europa hung beautifully in orbit around Jupiter, and the image was nice and bright, if displaying a slight tinge of chromatic aberration, though certainly not much and certainly not as much as I'd expect in a scope in this price range. Moving up to the 10mm eyepiece, Jupiter came even closer into view, with the ability to actually discern color bands on the surface (though still quite faint). I didn't bother with the 3x Barlow, as that's typically too much mag for a scope of this kind. However, I do have a nice set of Neewer eyepieces, and decided to see if there was enough quality here to run the 6.5mm. Many scopes tend to become useless and dark at high mag levels, so I didn't have high hopes. Boy was I wrong. Using my own personal 6.5mm eyepiece, color bands on Jupiter were now CLEARLY in view and easily discernable. As part of my kit, a 2x Barlow is included, and if you want to get the most out of this scope, I recommend getting at most a 2x Barlow and a 6-7mm Plossl eyepiece and this scope will get you plenty close enough see color bands on Jupiter, or even the great red spot (if it happens to be in view, which it wasn't tonight). It should even get you close enough (and sharp enough) to see the rings of Saturn. To say I was impressed with the ability of this scope to use higher mag eyepieces and still be usable and bright enough (as well as sharp enough) is an understatement. It displayed only the slightest hints of chromatic aberration, and image sharpness was outstanding, being good enough to make this a fine scope for the beginning astronomer in your life. Like any scope, bear in mind that the quality of tripod and head used will directly impact how much fun one can have with this. The included tripod is barely adequate, and you will find a gear drive photography head and a quality tripod to be one of the best investments you can make, even for a budget scope. The good thing about a quality tripod and gear drive head is you can use it for your camera, too. It really is an investment that will pay HUGE dividends in terms of the usability of a scope. Benro, Manfrotto, K&F Concept, all make very decent geared heads for tripods, and I recommend them very, very highly. There's a lot to like here for the money. For less than $75 you get a scope that comes with high quality optics, and that includes the included 10 and 20mm eyepieces, which seem fairly comparable to my eyepiece set in terms of quality. I recommend a 2x Barlow and a 6-7mm eyepiece as "must-have" accessories, and think the included 3x Barlow is a bit too much for this scope. The optical quality is excellent for the price, making observing Jupiter and it's moons simple, easy, and fun. As a serious amateur photographer, I can be particularly hard on optics, judging them quite harshly. And if I thought the optics here weren't any good, I'd definitely point that out. But they're nice and sharp, only displaying a tinge of chromatic aberration (but still being very usable), and can handle higher mag eyepieces such as my 6.5mm Plossl with no problems, maintaining a nice bright and usable image. Like any scope in this price range, the included tripod is merely an afterthought, and investing in a quality tripod and geared head will be money well spent. In fact, the only reason I took a star off of this review is for the ho-hum tripod, when the tripod and head in use is as important as the quality of the optics. A bad tripod and poorly designed head makes it HARD to hunt down objects in the sky, and a beginner will quickly lose interest if they simply can't find what they're looking for. Put some money towards a geared head and decent tripod and someone will get a LOT of use out of this little scope. I can only wish I would have grown up with an instrument of this quality, sub-$100 scopes in the 70's and 80's weren't very good. This is an amazing value with great optics if you put a decent mount underneath it, and I recommend it. But without a decent mount, like most budget scopes finding objects can be frustrating and taxing, especially with a mis-aligned spotting scope. A geared head and a quality tripod make this a fun instrument and well worth the price. ... show more

OK beginner telescope with poor instructions
This is a beginner telescope with beginner telescope features. It comes with the travel bag, barlow lens, two regular lenses, tripod, viewfinder, accessory tray, mobile phone shutter remote, and cell phone mount. My favorite thing was the cell phone mount (eventually) and my least favorite was the instructions. Let's start with the instructions. From the start, it was difficult to figure out how things worked or fit together. I was able to figure some of it out, but had to turn to YouTube to figure out how the phone holder attaches to the telescope (hint you have to pull off the rubber eye rest of one of the lenses and attach there). I imagine this in the hands of an eager kid and their parent, both scratching their heads in frustration, wondering how to get this set up. Once attached, it's fairly intuitive that you would place your phone in the cradle, adjust it at the right angle (depending on the phone's lens placement), and then slide it up or down to line it up to the hole and lock it in place. I like the universal design of it and that you can lock it in once you have it right, but instructions would have been good. Once you know what you're doing, setup and tear down is simple enough and the storage bag is good to keep dust off, but not much of a solution for travel or organizing since it's not very well designed or padded in any real way. The telescope, itself delivers the basics that you should require from any beginner scope and offers a clear view of the sky, meaning it will be a good scope for the beginner at an affordable price. I like this telescope for the remote, bag (barely), and phone mount, but dislike how much work the buyer has to contribute to figure it out. ... show more
