  • Works great for pfsense
I turned this into a pfsense box (dedicated router + firewall) and it works great. I added a low profile dual nic intel pci-e card (internal realtek is not as reliable and you kind of need two lan ports for pfsense although not required, highly recommended), a 4GB ram stick and a 32GB ssd. Put it in a mini-itx case (smallest and cheapest one that allows a low profile pci-e card: IN-WIN 200W Mini-ITX Slim Desktop Case, Black BP655.FH200B For not that much money, I have a fast and reliable pfsense box, one that supports aes-ni for openvpn (hardware assisted encryption). This thing maxes out my 50mbit line with openvpn while single core cpu utilization is around 15-20%. Another reviewer commented it doesn't work with linux, that is obviously not true. There is a bios setting that allows booting from a flash drive in legacy mode (I forget exactly what it is called but it is pretty obvious when you go through the menus). PS. This is the dual-core version, which is sufficient for pfsense. For media and other applications, perhaps the slightly more expensive quad-core version should be considered: ASRock Motherboard & CPU Combo Motherboards J3455B-ITX ... show more

  • Limited Instructions
Boy, has this thing wasted my time. On my original order, I set it up and had trouble determining how to connect the front panel wires from the case to this thing. They don't specify how to connect two of the four wires, so just go with black wires being ground. But anyway, my real problem wasn't that. The thing just wouldn't turn on -- trying for hours. Turns out it was defective, so I ordered a replacement. Unfortunately, it took long for Amazon to send me a replacement (10 days) but at least they took care of the entire shipping costs. My replacement arrived and the thing immediately turned on. Sweet deal. Problem now was that I just couldn't install the OS. This thing was meant for Windows 8 and up. After hours, I gave up. Before going to bed, I just searched why a motherboard wouldn't allow me install a Linux OS but it turns out that new motherboards have this dumb lock or something that you have to disable. I can't remember exactly what I did but I remember turning on some legacy options. So finally, I was able to install pfSense! This is my 4th day running it. No random shutdowns or anything like that. The thing runs great though I thought it was going to be using less energy. According to Kill-A-Watt, it's using up around 27.5 watts per second on idle (0% CPU usage right now, amazingly). My pfSense is still freshly installed without fancy things yet, so I'm sure the power consumption will go up a bit more. I have a 2.5" hard drive, a 4GB RAM stick, a quad NIC and...that's about it. With one small fan from the chassis running too, of course. If anyone's interested in more details from my future installments on pfSense and power usage, let me know. I think Amazon does notify us when we get a reply on our comments. ... show more

  • This sucks.
Absolutely horrible. Not even considering the fact that sometimes the reviews are at 3.9 but now at 4.2 with one less review. I’ve ordered this once and the first time it didn’t work. I tried two different ram sticks, two different power supplies and two different cases. Everything was brand new as well. So after I bought it I got a replacement and the replacement didn’t work for more than 5 seconds. I even followed the manual. I tried time and time again but to no avail. ... show more

  • Don't use for Linux installation
I assume this is a descent board, but with Lubuntu 16.04 installed it will periodically disconnect the devices plugged into the USB ports and ASRock doesn't support Linux. If you're looking to install Linux look elsewhere.

  • Died on 46th day
I purchased this for my htpc......Installed May 17, 2017 & died July 2, 2017. Worked fine for 45 days then on the 46th day it failed to load windows & now it will not power back up. I re-installed the old mb & it boots up fine. There was not anything wrong with my old mb, it just couldn't handle h265 videos (J2900 cpu) so I replaced it with this one. I liked it before it died, played h265 vids well. I'll update my review after I contact ASRock....as for now I give it 1 star. Update July 18, 2017 I received the replacement today. Installed & working well.....hopefully the 1st one was a fluke. I changed the rating to 4 star ... show more
