Description

One deck dungeon: forest of shadows is a stand-alone expansion to 2016’s smash hit, one deck dungeon. One deck dungeon is a tabletop version of the popular video game phenomenon of Rogue likes -- dungeon delves where you try and survive as long as you can against increasingly nasty monsters. The game is very easy to learn, featuring intuitive dice mechanics and thematic skills and abilities. As a 1-2 player cooperative game, one deck dungeon is a great fit for in-store demos, and the artwork and components make for an attractive demo display. With the base game plus the expansion, (or two copies of either), a Group can bring a party of four into the dungeon). an important part of our art and presentation strategy for one deck dungeon was that all five of its heroes were women, and realistically-clad. We have continued that with forest of shadows and all six of its heroes.

  • Fun once you understand the rules
I've played this both solo and with my wife and it's a lot of fun in both situations. I like that you can earn skill points on your character which help you in future adventures. It did take a while to understand the rules and I did have to sit down and watch a video on it but ultimately the best way to learn is just start playing and pick through the rule book for "okay what do I need to know next" rather than trying to have a full understanding of it before you start. The first play-through I thought it was way too easy and it turned out that's because I wasn't following the rules quite right and I should have died a long time ago but that's okay, it's all part of the learning process. The "use time" mechanic seemed strange to me because it's presented as a negative thing: a consequence of failing to attack the monster as well as you could have or the cost to use a special ability. "Using time" mean discarding cards from the deck which brings you closer to the next level of the dungeon, which ultimately brings you closer to the main boss at the end and thus the end of the game so you would think that "using time" is a good thing. After all the sooner you get to the boss the fewer monsters you have to kill. But after giving it a lot of thought I realized that each of the monsters and challenges you face along the way gives you (if you are successful at defeating them) experience, items, skills ... things you'll need to be strong enough to defeat the boss. So letting time pass "discarding cards" and not facing those challenges means you're missing the opportunity to obtain the benefits of having faced and defeated those challenges. ... show more

  • Dice chucking fantasy game to play alone or with others in a single game or a campaign. This game has it all in a small package.
I love the challenge this game offers. I have the original One Deck Dungeon as well and really enjoy this game. The concept of poison is what really separates this from the original in terms of changing gameplay mechanics. There are new heroes to play with, new dungeons to enter, and new campaigns to begin. The amount of gameplay and fun in this little box is unmatched as far as I am concerned. The campaigns are what really make this something that I play once a night. After playing several nights in a row, I feel like I have gained perspective about when I should and shouldn’t attempt a challenge. Building your skills up over time and finally beating a boss you have tried to beat a few times before is really gratifying when you play a campaign. If you like chucking dice, a fantasy theme, and a game you can play by yourself or with others, definitely get this one and the original. It is probably not appealing to everyone, but if it sounds interesting, you will probably like it. If you played Dragonwood and wanted more or desired for it to be cooperative, you will love either One Deck Dungeon game. ... show more

  • fun and enough of a challenge
It's a fun and simple version of Dungeons and Dragons basically. Pick a character (which are all females), get your potions, explore the dungeon (4 cards from the deck at a time), choose to fight or flee, repeat, use your potions wisely, and if you are lucky you will get through all 3 levels and defeat the boss without dying. It is fun to play with up to 4 players doubling the deck, or solo. I suggest playing the mixed deck version of the game with both the original and Forest of Shadows decks. My only suggestion would be for the creators to make more expansion packs to get more heroes, dungeons, and bosses. ... show more

  • Very challenging game with a very poorly written rulebook
This is a fun game, but it's pretty dang difficult to beat. My husband and I have played twice now and won both times, but it was a miracle that we did. In our first playthrough, we cheated a little bit, but it was entirely because the rulebook is horrendous. It's so hard to understand, and the order in which the rules are written is baffling. Once we figured everything out (I hope we actually did), it was a bit more challenging but also more fun since attempting to understand the rules got pretty stressful during our first game. My husband likes the challenge and will likely be playing solo sometimes, and honestly, I don't have much of a problem with the level of difficulty because we ended up actually needing all of our potions and skills and whatnot. The difficulty matched the setup, if that makes sense. Other than the rulebook, my only other complaint is that the game certainly does not take thirty minutes, unless maybe you die before winning? It took us over an hour both times, not including reading through the rules, so that seems noteworthy. Overall, it's a fun, challenging game that's hard to understand at first because of the maze of a rulebook, and it will likely take much longer than 30 minutes to play. ... show more

  • Fun stuff
Really enjoyed my playthroughs of this game. Haven't conquered it yet but for a dice game it was good. Easy to learn and small footprint game.

  • Challenging fun!
This expansion is a lot more challenging then the base game. The new heroes are way stronger then the base game as well. You do not need the base game to play this expansion. If I were to pick just one to get I would get this expansion as it contains the same elements as the base game plus the new poison mechanic. ... show more

  • Great standalone and expansion
This is an expansion to One Deck Dungeon but at the same time can be played by itself as it has all the components as the main game. You can also combine this with the main ODD and play up to 4P. I really love the compactness of this boardgame that I can just bring it along with me while traveling.

  • Fun Solo Game
Read about this game on BoardGameGeek and was intrigued. I play as a single player- the game is challenging but allows campaign mode to gain experience and additional skills before play in "real" mode. The box arrived quickly and in new condition. Recommend as a single player game for a quick bit of fun in the afternoon or evening. ... show more
