  • These shoes are awesome!
I am a retired Chiropractic Physician. As such I have a big interest in how a shoe performs its intended use! In my professional opinion, the major job of most athletic and non-athletic shoes is shock attenuation! I am speaking of training shoes. In competition shoe’s you want conservation, possibly multiplication of effort/energy to give you a small advantage over your competition. Yes sometimes it is the shoes! For training and real life activities you want a shoe that lesson this arguably small, but long-term force that translates from heel strike, up the calcaneus and navicular bones, up the Tibia, to the Femur into the acetabulofemoral joint, into the ilium, through the sacroiliac joint, then into the Sacrum and into the Lumbar Spine, where over time and with other factors… such as genetics, activity levels, how you chose to lift things, how much time you sit on your Ischial tuberosities (anatomical Dr. Speak for your butt!), injuries, just plain bad luck! ….. the list would be pretty much endless! If you can lessen the blow from walking and especially running to help your spinal health…If you wear your body out where will you live then?… from a clinical point of view, running is one of the most destructive activities for your lower back, if runners could see the X-ray evidence of what they do to their bodies in the name of health, they would be shocked! Unfortunately pretty much every and all, big time runner that came in to see me for low back pain in their 30’s and 40’s, demonstrated findings of advanced osteoarthritis more in line with a 80 to 90 year old’s spine! They would refuse to stop running as they are so addicted to the activity! I even had a guy that broke a bone in his foot and wouldn’t stop running! The typical pair of athletic/running shoes rely on ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam to provide their cushioning. It does a wondrous job of this for about 3 months of normal use. EVA foam works by having very small air bubbles trapped in a matrix of EVA! With the continual pounding the foot is subject too, breaks/pops these bubbles, they deflate and no longer are of any effect in attenuating shock! This is all fine and dandy if you are willing to lay out the cash to buy a new pair of shoes every 3 months! Not something I would be willing to do because after 3 months the shoes look great still and with the cost of a good pair of athletic shoes/trainers approaching $200.00 sometimes more, I don’t have the budget for them! What set the Nike Air system apart is that the cushioning/shock attenuation comes from bladders filled with air. The bladders can be made from virtually indestructible materials, as long as the bladders are intact they supply pretty much at least 90% of the original shock attenuation for the entire life of the shoe unless a hole develop in the bladder….very rare… I wore my Nike Airs for 2-3 years, and I think I only put holes in the pair previous to the last ones I bought! In 1986 (Air was introduced by Nike in the 70’s) Asics introduced a gel made of soft elastomer, kept in a solid construction for stability and durability taking the idea a step further… as the gel does a better, job than the air does! I have almost exclusively worn Nikes since getting my first pair of blue suede basketball shoes ($19.99), with a white swoosh down the side. My angel mother scrimped and saved to buy me my first name brand athletic shoes.. other than Ked’s from Wolf’s sporting goods in Orem Utah at age 13! I went into wolfs fully expecting to walk out with a pair of Adidas! I was persuaded by the salesman, the 6’9” star basketball player at Provo high school, to consider Nike’s! I hadn’t really heard of Nike, and anyone who was anyone at Farrer Jr High wore Adidas. For some reason I has hooked, from then on! I progresses through the Nike Cortez craze in the ’70s to survived the Air Jordan craze, that’s what made Nike the powerhouse in the athletic shoe field! You had to have a pair of Jordan’s to be anybody! I wasn’t too impressed with them as I hate basketball… especially playing it! I remember buying a pair of Bo Jackson cross trainers that I loved.I even bought my now ex-wife a pair,I thought. They were so cool… we wore the same size shoe, me a men’s 8.5… I inherited my moms little feet she wore a size 5 as a women that was 5’7’’ pretty small. My wife wore a size 10, she was 5’8” she was an amazon! I usually bought the Air Max model! So what has made me turn my back on Nike! The last pair I bought…Air Monarchs, not the top of the line, but not far off! I wore a size 8.5 for the vast majority of my teen to adult life, but I moved to 9’s as the 8.5s were getting too tight! Weird! The monarchs ended up beating my toes to shreds! I have never had this happen with Nike’s.. to make a long story short I lost my left toenail, and I then developed an infection in the left toe, that the local Urgent Care Doc, (The MD that saw me was exceedingly lucky he had the doc-in-the-box practice to chose, because with his non-existent bed-side manor, he would probably starve, he was so passionless if he had to attracked patients to sustain his practice) thought was bacterial. and Rx me antibiotics, my son a currently practiceing Chiropractic Physician and I thought it was fungal! Now I am anything but a fan of the pharmaco-medical industry, so I chose to treat my toe with raw honey! I had great results with absolutly no side effects, or loss of my needed intestinal flora! That pair of Nikes did quite a number on my toe’s, I was looking at my right hallux (big toe), last night, while I was sitting on the pot trying to take a dump before I got in the shower, and it looks like the nail is going to be history too! So what caused this plethora of toe issues? I think it was a firestorm of issues. The toe box in the Air Monarch must be to small and my Parkinson’s (PD) shuffle when I walk. I bought the Monarchs because I had worn a huge hole in my Air Max’s! I know my gate has been severely effected by my PD…what in my life isn’t! I had been introduced to Asics Tiger gel at some point in my practice….probably a patient bought a pair after I barfed all over him about the true virtues of Nike Air…and I pretty much ignored me, I didn’t do my usual anal research into similar technologies. I would have I would have probably shifted allegiance away from Nike, as the gel they use has been improved 9 time since their introduction! They are currently using what they call FlyteFoam a creation designed to merge with gel. Using nano-fibers between air bubbles, the new foam comes with a 20 percent enhancement in strength and durability while creating a lighter product!` ... show more

  • Decent!
Size: 11 Color: White/Tuna Blue
High school x-country and track runner in the late 2000's, these shoes felt like what i remembered from that time. Durable, nice solid material, pretty good cushion once you break them in (important). FOffers good support, and has performed well with zero complaints.
