  • It is a neutral shoe build, which means that it is not made for pronation or supination
I weigh 230 lbs. This shoe provides the cushioning I need for walking and running. Another important issue for me is the heel counter, which is rarely talked about. Asics has one of the strongest, if not the strongest, heel counters. A strong heel counter keeps your foot in place and allows for your natural gate and aids in not rolling over on your ankle. Strong heel counters are the first thing I ck in purchasing a running shoe. Love this shoe and the Asics Gel Kayano. ... show more

  • Missing the cushion
I am a female runner and though I only run about 4 miles a week, it is important that I have a shoe that not only protects my feet from impact but is comfortable as well. I bought a men's shoe because they are generally wider and I didn't like the colors offered for women's wide widths. I previously had a Gel-Nimbus 18 and they were absolutely wonderful! But current models were not nearly as cushioned. Very discouraged, I read expert reviews that said the Cumulus was more cushioned and better suited to my needs. I tried on the Cumulus and couldn't really tell the difference so I bought the Cumulus and tried them out at home. I discovered that the problem with the current models is the insole -- it is very thin, whereas my old shoe has a wonderfully spongy insole. I put the old insole in my new shoe and it made all the difference! I don't understand why Asics is using such a cheap insole. So in conclusion, this shoe is great is every way except for the cushioning -- I had to add my own insole to make it comfortable. And the tongue and ankle cushioning is not so good either. I hope Asics will return to their old designs in the future because I think the few ounces of weight savings aren't worth the loss of comfort. ... show more

  • High Quality
I have slight supination and have found that Asics Gel Cumulus are the best shoes for me when I walk, jog, or run. I mostly wear them to walk my dog 3-4 miles a day and they are very comfortable. They breathe very nice as well. The outer soles hold up pretty well to the road and sidewalk. I probably put about 50-60 miles per month and replace my cumulus' every 6-7 months or so. I started with the 17's and have had the 18s, 19s, 20s, and now the 21 and they keep getting better. The cushioning on this shoe is probably somewhere around medium. It isn't overly cushioned, but they aren't hard either. The response when running is nice. It seems like a lot of running shoes nowadays come in all kinds of crazy colors and designs. One of the things I like most about the cumulus is that the design is pretty simple and basic, yet it's still a very good looking shoe. I get compliments on them very often. I really don't like spending over $100 on a pair of shoes but these are worth it. I have never had a problem with shin splits or foot pain or anything else with these. Before you buy these shoes and leave a bad comment because you don't like them do your research on running shoes. Asics isn't a one size fits all shoe; the Kayano, Nimbus, and Cumulus are all made for people with different arches and running gaits. They also come in different widths. It might take a few shoes to really dial it in but once you find one you like you won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • Comfort and stability on flat surfaces
I really quite like these running shoes. I admit, they spend most of their time on my feet NOT running. I'm a fashion photographer and spend a lot of time on hard concrete studio floors or on streets outside. I can always tell when I need new sneakers. My ankles hurt at the end of a long day. These have great padding and support. On the running end of things, the ASICS provide lots of cushioned support. Since I tend to run more on the balls of my feet rather the classic heel-to-toe, I do wish they had a bit more padding under the balls. That said, these are comfortable and provide the support I need. One caveat. I like/prefer trail running over streets/roads. This may mean farm roads, cinder trails to gravel trails in parks or my own 1-mile farm road. For this type of running, they don't provide quite the ankle support a stability and I prefer to wear my Merrill low hikers (not running shoes per se, but great stability and support). If you want a really nicely cushion running shoe, this is for you. ... show more

  • One of ASICS Better Products
I needed a new pair sneakers and ASICS has been my "go to". I could not get my favorite, Gel Kayano 21, so I ordered Gel Kayano 26. To be blunt, these were not well made and undersized. I wear a D width and these were C+ at best. I returned these shoes and ordered the Gel Cumulus 21. It appears older is better, because the Gel Cumulus 21s are far superior to the Gel Kayano 26s. Sizing is perfect and they are very comfortable. To Amazon's credit, I received a rebate immediately after giving my return to UPS. To emphasize, I am very happy with my new running shoes. ... show more

  • Great running shoe for over pronation, soles wear as expected
I can’t believe some of the reviews complaining about the soles of the shoe. I’ve come to the gel cumulus for running after a lot of careful consideration. I try a variety of shoes out on the treadmill, and for me, these are the best fit and feel. Your expert may vary based on your feel and use. For reference I’m a woman, 5’10”, around 170lbs, and yes I buy men’s shoes because I have man sized feet (10.5). I run a 9 minute mile, average about 15 miles a week, and am an underpronator, which is what these shoes are for. I’ve included pictures of the soles of my cumulus 21s and cumulus 20s, which have become my “around town” shoes. The 21s are the blue soles, you can see from the debris that I wore them this morning. There is wear visible on the soles at the toe and outer mid foot which is indicative of an underpronator, and very little to no wear anywhere else. I’ve been running in these shoes since around the beginning of May, and I’ve put on around 350 miles on them. The black soles are the 20s, which I haven’t worn much outside of running, as I usually wear sandals for warm weather. Wear patterns are very similar but more extensive because I used these for a solid year before replacing, probably closer to 500 miles. Either way, they’re wearing normally according to how I’m using them. Uppers on both are in great condition. Hopefully this gives a more balanced view of this shoe for anyone interested. Happy running! ... show more
