Description

"[S]pace opera that plays out on a grand scale, and Young conduct[s] it with aplomb."--Pop Cults, the website of Geek and Alternative Culture For over seven hundred years, the Spartan Republic’s citizens have known one truth: Terra is coming. Descendants of exiles who dared to defy an emperor, the star nation’s 70 billion citizens spent the centuries training, arming…and waiting. In 3035, Leftenant Ian Campbell, Spartan Defense Forces (SDF), discovers a strange anomaly on his corvette’s sensors…and realizes the wait is over. The Spartans must convince the Terrans of the cost of subduing their nation. If they succeed, the Republic survives. If not, the SDF will be forced to paint the stars red with their enemies’ blood. The Confederation of Man was born in the terror of the Harran Empire’s death throes. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, humanity now spreads from its cradle on Earth to hundreds of stars across the Milky Way, and seeks out new worlds to add. Captain Marcy Cochran was hoping to find a habitable planet; she didn't expect the system to already have hostile humans. Now a captive, Cochran must contend with a crew proving to be as dangerous as their enemies, and prevent what has started out as a misunderstanding from becoming a full-fledged interstellar war. For Terran law is quite clear: All humanity will answer to the Confederation. For the Spartans, that makes the government on Earth no different than the empire it supplanted…and they would rather die on their feet than subjugate themselves once more. Aries’ Red Sky is the newest novel in James Young’s Vergassy Chronicles universe. A prequel to An Unproven Concept, it is the first in the Spartan Trilogy. • A great read that asks hard questions......
A great read that asks hard questions about morality and war along with it's aftermath and consequences. "Sometimes one must become more like those you struggle against than one wishes in order to win."

  • Characters are well developed
I enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed, and the story shows the good and bad of both sides instead of treating the Spartans or Terrans as irredeemably evil. I'm looking forward to A Pyre of the Stars and Though Our Hulls Burn making it to kindle.

  • An enthralling gritty tail but I had the feeling of deja vu!
An exciting and well thought out catastrophic clash between two opposing ideals and cultures with individuals of honour on both sides dogged by those who are not of the highest scruples with the inevitable consequences of the wrong people being in the wrong place at the wrong time and others believing in their cause and trying to pull through. Yet, as I have noted in the title line and, although I have never read another book by this author the story was somehow hauntingly familiar. Perhaps that is merely the mark of a true wordsmith on the reader's psyche. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • History repeated
All that we learn we must relearn to prevent a possible wrong future. Never forget is a important saying. The author here used history to make you think about what a future could be. You get entertainment and an education.

  • So good
Love this series. The writing is so good I just wish there was more in this series. At times I love the Spartans and other times I want their worlds nuked to ashes. That's good writing.

  • Great sci-fi read
Great story full of action and great characters. First book I've read by this author and I can't wait to read another.

  • Future Great Sci-Fi author
I have all of his books and thoroughly enjoy every one. If you miss now you'll regret it in the future

  • Waiting for volume 2
Really enjoyed the book; waiting for volume 2 (in 2020!!!). With Kindle Prime, we have access to far more books than we can ever read; that means that we sometimes drop books without giving them a real chance. This book more than rewarded my effort. The fact that I am eagerly awaiting the next installment speaks for itself. Complex story that pulls many threads together. Lots of action and interesting characters. The writing is a little curtailed (? - not sure if that is the right word to use); sometimes I had to reread a page to grasp the thread, but that is as much a commentary on my reading skills as on Young's writing skills. Minor carp - a few too many typos, but that will almost certainly be corrected in a subsequent edition. Well worth reading. ... show more
