  • Generally Great (Edited, now Not So Great) (edited: AVOID)
Style: Atari Legacy
Update 21 June: yes, it's been well over a month since the PCB in this unit failed and I am STILL waiting on a warranty replacement. Note that Arcade1Up doesn't have a phone number for customer problems...they make you open a help desk ticket on their website. Repeated inquiries over the space of a month keep getting the same response: "we are waiting on the manufacturer, please be patient, etc etc.". Polite requests to talk about other options (refund, etc) are ignored. My advice: AVOID THIS PRODUCT UNLESS/UNTIL MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ARE ADDRESSED. Sad to say this is an item with known defects in the PCB, and if you chance a purchase you risk the unit blowing out and waiting a looooong time for a replacement that, at this point, may never come. Beware. Update 12 May: belay all that below. After only two months the PCB card in this unit failed. That means while the marquee still lights up, the game itself does not power on, so it's a giant paperweight. Talking to support at Arcade1Up diagnosed the issue and they are sending a new PCB card...sometime. It's been over a week since I talked to them and they are very slow in sending the replacement. Not even shipped yet. Some more research showed that this is not a unique issue to me - it's a widespread problem. My recommendation: PASS on buying this until the technical issues are worked out. Replacing the PCB card isn't overly difficult, but it is a bit fussy and requires a delicate touch. --- It's generally great. I don't see it on par with my Star Wars Arcade 1Up though. First, the cabinet and such is as expected. A fair amount of DIY assembly but nothing a single person can't handle. Some of the holes didn't match up properly but there's enough give in the design that it ultimately doesn't matter. My issues are primarily with some of the hardware, along with at least one aesthetic issue.... For the latter, the marquee does light up, but the printing is very washed out. It makes the effect very off putting. And as far as the display goes.... Look, games like Tempest, Asteroids, etc are vector graphics. Back in the day they were on CRT screens, not LCD. You WANT a bit of fuzziness to the display. My Star Wars cabinet has a display setting where I can mimic that, and it looks fantastic. This cabinet...doesn't. So it's a 1980 game that is being shown with extremely sharp and vivid graphics, which just looks a bit off. This is the main issue for me, since I'm not looking at the marquee when I'm playing, but I AM looking at the screen, and it just looks too much like what it is...an emulator on 21st century hardware. Lastly, the controllers are...loose. By that I mean the paddle control spins too freely without any sense of control, and the trackball is about the same. In addition, while I get that there is a limited amount of space on the deck for the controllers, having them placed the way they are means playing Tempest is a bit uncomfortable, and playing Asteroids is very. My sense is that Arcade 1Up could have coordinated the games a bit better here. BUT, the games themselves are faithful to the originals. Missile Command is just as bloody frustrating as I remember. Tempest is excellent. And so on. Again, control placement and hardware quality are the main issue for me, but those can be addressed via aftermarket replacements. For now, out of the (somewhat large) box this is excellent as a casual gaming machine. For serious gamers, some work is needed but the basics are here and the potential can be realized. A good item. ... show more

  • Throwback cabinet design my favorite so far!!
Style: Atari Legacy
I've been heavily involved in the Pinball and Video Gaming community for more than 25 years, the 3/4 scale Tempest replica does some justice for the Arcade-1Up Legacy cabinet series and is a nice representation of the great classic Tempest which I've owned many of over the years. No, you can not get vector graphics quality on an LCD display, so don't expect the "same" visual aspects, but the gameplay is pretty spot-on to the original, and the next generation spinner from Arcade1Up (IMHO) is much better than the one used on the Gen 1 Asteroids which was pretty much useless. It spins freely, has good response, and doesn't feel extremely cheap. Kudos! The trackball seems to work well on this unit as well, and proved its worth during a nice game of Missile Command which is one of my all-time favs. You have a nice selection of titles included on this Legacy unit, and most Atari Arcade game fans will appreciate what you are getting for the price. The cabinet goes together fairly easily with common hand tools and patience. It is particle board quality hardware, so never over tighten the screws or use cordless drills unless you are experienced with them. The only setback upon building and playing this Atari Legacy cabinet was an issue I had with the gameboard stuck on the "Loading" screen, and the fix was to simply turn it off, then turn it back on a couple seconds later. I have seen this issue with other buyers more than once, so apparently there is a quark of some kind hindering the logic control board in these made between July 2021 and December 2021. My guess would be 3rd party chips used to manufacture when particular chips were impossible to buy at the time of manufacturing them. I will be sure to post another update in the coming months if I notice anything out of the ordinary on this Arcade1Up game. I would still recommend this to anyone interested in buying it just based on the gameplay, and the overall cabinet appearance in general. I'm pretty satisfied as are my kids who love the classics almost as much as I do. ... show more
