Zip ties are amazing! Getting good tension and a clean cut is a challenge. This tool makes it a lot easier. I use a lot of zip ties for my Christmas lights and got tired of the weird angles to get them tightened, then having to get one hand on the free end and another hand on a pair of cutters to trim the excess off and keep the extra tie length from ending up somewhere in my shrubs and grass. This tool helps get good tension and cuts/keeps the ends. Operation is very simple, apply the zip tie like you normally would, inserting the strap through the locking head and make sure the teeth engage. Then it's as simple as threading the strap through the cutter side of the tool and using the plier-type handles to ratchet it to your desired tightness. When you have the tension you want, simply squeeze the third handle to get a clean, close cut of the excess strap. The excess stays engaged in the ratchet piece and as pulled through and discarded. The most difficult part of the process is getting the strap through the small, thin ratchet end of the tool, but it has to be that way to be able to grip the zip tie. The tool worked great for this application! I did run into a little more difficulty when trying to secure a new wire harness inside of the center console of my car. The size of the tool makes it a challenge to work in really small spaces. It can be tough to get the tool angled properly and I ended up with the zip tie end going through the side of the ratchet piece instead of over the teeth. It is not a critical flaw, but there is a little room for improvement when it comes to reducing the clearance on the side of the ratchet cam. It was easy enough to pull the tool off and readjust, but I found myself struggling with the angle a few times. The tool did still make it easy, once the zip tie was fed properly, to tighten the zip tie and cut the end, without losing the cut piece to a mess of nooks and crannies. I did still find it easier than trying to get a set of cutters into the right spot. This is a great tool for a variety of applications, and while there is always room for improvement, a worthwhile purchase if you deal with a lot of zip ties.     • A bit clumsy but effective

I haven't used it extensively, but I have tested it out on different sized zip ties. It is a big tool and a bit clumsy (in my opinion) with the 2 handles, so it only really works with big zip ties. The big handle tightens the zip tie and the small handle activates the cutter. The cutter is a bit stiff and needs a bit of wiggling to get it to work properly but I suspect that will loosen with use. It isn't a miracle tool but works "okay". It is of heavy duty construction so it is gonna last forever I suspect. ... show more

I have other zip tie tools but they only can handle up to a certain size zip ties (on the smaller spectrum). However, this tool is just the opposite; they shine on handling the larger zip ties and lose it on the smaller ones. They will not work at all on the 3-4" zip ties. So, the lesson here is... use this tool for the bigger zip tie jobs and stick to the smaller tools for the smaller jobs. Also, I should note that though they can handle the larger zip ties like a champ, they still do not give you an absolute flush cut; not bad or an extreme eyesore, but you'll have a little material left over.
