Description

The remarkable (and occasionally ridiculous) stories of 48 nations that fell off the map.“Countries are just daft stories we tell each other. They’re all equally implausible once you get up close.”Countries die. Sometimes it’s murder, sometimes it’s by accident, and sometimes it’s because they were so ludicrous they didn’t deserve to exist in the first place. This is an atlas of 48 nations that fell off the map. Their causes of death range from the implausible (jerky prices) to the unfortunate (too evil) to the downright bizarre (the flip of a coin). The polite way of writing an obituary is: dwell on the good bits, gloss over the embarrassing stuff. This book refuses to do so, because these dead nations are so ridiculous that it’s impossible to skip the embarrassing stuff. ★ “This book is a sparkling gem.”—Booklist (Starred Review)“Perfect for fans of Atlas Obscura.”—Publishers Weekly Read more

  • Delightful and entertaining! History is even messier than we think!
Gideon Defoe has collected some truly amazing stories of countries that existed for a fairly short time (or maybe not all) and ended for reasons ranging from typical to bizarre or even ridiculous. This is a remarkably entertaining book to read and I'm sure I'll come back to it again. It reminded me a bit of the "It All Started With..." books by Richard Armour from the 1950's and Will Cuppy's "The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody" from the same period (and his "How to Become Extinct" from the 1940's. It's all true, but somehow it's still hard to believe it's so. A thoroughly enjoyable book: do yourself a favor and grab a copy! ... show more

  • GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR
The entries in this book are quite brief, so you will often find yourself wishing they were more in depth, but the author’s sense of humor more than makes up for this. These few quotes will give you an example of the kind of writing you’re in for: > “Lithuanian soldiers turned up and dealt with the landlord in the way that everyone would like to deal with landlords.” > “The International Zone was the result of Europe, as usual, not being able to agree on anything at all.” > “Note: If your plan involves the British coming to your rescue, then it is a Bad Plan. Can’t emphasize this enough.” And, finally, from the Acknowledgements page: “I’ve never met most of the people who helped put this book together. They might be horrible in real life.” With such a great sense of humor, this is a book I would recommend to everyone who is into history and/or geography. And, for that matter, con artists, because a lot of the so-called countries in this book were practically swindles. Fascinating stuff! ... show more

  • Interesting to map lovers/historians
Fun read, but only if you are a historian or map lover. Each article is about 3-4 pages, with a little history thrown in.
