Description

'AMERICAN EAGLES' is the thrilling, true story of the US 101st Airborne Division. From their rigorous training in 'Old Jolly' (England) to their first operational jump in Normandy, Whiting tells the story of this 'Band of Brothers', who fought, suffered and died in the eleven month campaign that followed. From Normandy through Holland, Bastogne, French Alsace till their final date with destiny at Hitler's Eagle's Nest in the Bavarian Alps, we gain a picture of a brave elite division 'warts and all'. Drawing on his own youthful experiences when his regiment was under the command of 101st Airborne in Holland, through painstaking research on the site of each of the 101st's battles, plus survivors stories, Whiting, perhaps Britain's most renowned popular WWII military historian, provides an ideal companion for the viewers of Steven Spielberg's celebrated $100 million TV series 'Band of Brothers'. • Good Read!
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the book, learned some things about them I didn't know! Would like to read a book about the 82nd!

  • A good read for those interested in non Hollywooded history.
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the book. It does unsettle me to read about so many negative aspects of the men (rape, murder etc.) as well as the number of men killed because of glory seeking, egotistical commanders.

  • Airborne?
Format: Kindle
After reading this book I get the impression that the 101st jumped on D-day, June 6 and never again. One of those examples of "How did we ever win the war?" Apparently, to keep up with the Germans, the 101st is formed. Then a lot of effort in training with considerable loss of life during the training and then the D-day thing seems have been pretty much a disaster. ... show more

  • U.S. Screaming Eagles America's 101 Apirborne Legion
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the read it took the reader on a two year ride into one He'll of History Lesson on the Europe Battle field. I enjoyed the personal stories of soldiers actions and first hand thoughts at that time.

  • Sucks
Format: Kindle
Author needs to check his facts and translations. MacAurthor hot his CMH for actions in the Philippines in WWII. Berghof means mountain place, not home.

  • Waste of money
Format: Kindle
This claims to be a history of the101st. What a crock. The author spent more time bad mouthing people than telling the story of the 101st. Don't waste your money.
