Description

Picture the scene: 1849, a ship rounds Cape Horn carrying California's first gold shipment. President Zachary Taylor waits anxiously in Washington. Skeptics whisper the Gold Rush is fiction. Then the gold arrives—230 ounces of glittering proof. The doubters fall silent. Within months, unprecedented quantities flood east from the legendary forty-niners. The Philadelphia Mint faces a crisis: too much gold, not enough coins. Small denominations can't handle the volume. Someone proposes the unthinkable—a twenty-dollar piece, double the largest coin America has ever authorized. The Double Eagle is born. Chief Engraver James Longacre designs it with care. Lady Liberty wears a pearl-bordered diadem, her portrait inspired by the ancient Crouching Venus sculpture. On the reverse, America's Great Seal—eagle, shield, arrows, and olive branch. The coin is massive, substantial, commanding. For decades these heavy gold pieces flow through American commerce, building the West, changing hands in mining camps and land offices. Then they vanish into collections and vaults. Today, an original 1849 Double Eagle commands fifteen to fifty thousand dollars—if you can find one. Most Americans will never hold one. Too rare. Too valuable. Too risky. This tribute changes that equation. Same diameter. Same weight. Same commanding presence. Struck on solid brass with genuine 24-karat gold layering, every detail of Longacre's masterpiece comes alive—Liberty's coronet, the eagle's feathers, the stars and inscriptions. Museum-quality reproduction at a fraction of the original's cost. No vault. No insurance. No anxiety. Display it on your desk. Share it with grandchildren. Feel the heft of history. This is what American ambition looked like when it was made of gold.

  • Beautiful replica of the first double-eagle gold coin the U.S. mint made.
This looks like a proof coin. The 24 carat gold covering is very nicely done! I see that the mintage of this coin, with the 1849 date is: 1. That one is in the Smithsonian Institute's collection. The subsequent dates of this same design were in general circulation.

  • very shiny and looks impressive from a distance
From a distance this looks great, but you aren't going to fool anyone who knows what the real ones look like. It is very shiny, almost like a proof. It does not have the muted gold toning of an original coin. I got this as a prank to play on someone metal detecting, so it is perfect for that purpose. ... show more
