I opted to exchange them and went a half size bigger. The 8 1/2 was perfect in length and in the width. For reference my feet run slightly on the wide side, and run between a shoe size 7 1/2 to 8. Toe box is rounder in shape than other boots I've owned. The soles are not uncomfortable, just don't have any specific comfort or support features.
