  • Woof! BEST (and goofiest) shoes I have ever bought
I've been searching for the Holy Grail of comfort all terrain walkers my whole life. I have several excellent shoes I regularly use which fit well (Fila, Clarks, Timberlands) and have continually tried others, but never found IT. I'm also an engineering cheapskate and never spend over $50 on a shoe. But I was tired of coming up short, read some reviews that said Altra Lone Peaks were the unanimously awesome, with unusual engineering. So I bit the bullet and found a red (!) pair of the Lone Peak 6 on "clearance" for $86 with the 7 Day Try & Buy. Woof. These are simply the most comfortable, pain free, uniquely designed (and goofy!) shoes I have ever worn. A few things: - the "total foot " wide design allows your foot to "spread" at the ball in a natural way that mimics what your foot actually does without shoes. It's a strange but exceedingly natural sensation, with oddly enhanced stability over rough terrain (small rocks, gravel, sand, etc. The term is "foot feel" and it's real and it works. - "Neutral heel" design is that your heel is not elevated, as in every other shoe, which feels odd at first, but which propels you onto the balls of your feet, where you should probably be anyway. Completely counterintuitive to the "high heeled" running shoes of today, but once you try this, there's no going back. Natural and comfortable, in sync with how your foot is actually designed. - I am sensitive to heavy shoes, and these are perhaps the lightest trail runner you will find. Incredibly well cushioned for their weight. - Super high quality materials throughout - the shape and width and color are goofy as all get out, but I've come to see that as a feature, not a bug 😉 - I've tried these on numerous terrains this summer, rocky, sandy, gravelly, hard pack and paved surfaces, all with exceptional performance. The only thing I'll say is these are not at their best on hard pavement or concrete - not that they don't work, but their minimalist nature means they probably won't live long there. Altra has other styles which may work better for that. Net net: if you can stand the goofiness, these are like magic, I've found the Holy Grail. Highest recommendation. ... show more

  • 315Km. On the Camino de Santiago and still kicking!
I purchased these about a month ago for the Camino de Santiago. They are super light and seem to break-in quick enough. I wear sandals often so the zero-drop thing did not seem like a problem. In hindsight though I would have gone with the next model up that offers the extra padding. There are a variety of surfaces on the Camino and had it been primarily dirt it probably would not have been an issue but I had issues with discomfort on the bottom of my feet often enough. These are trail runners and had that been my primary use with them I know they would have been perfect aside from some issues with slippage on wet terrain. After probably now 400+Km. they have stayed intact and are quick to dry and easy to clean. They fit great and are true to size. I however went with a 1/2 size up because I was not able to get my true size. I really had no issues with blisters other than a toe that was compromised going into the Camino. Just keep your feet dry and immediately put some Moleskin on an affected area once you feel a hot spot brewing! Other people on the Camino were very happy with their Komas as well as they have Vibram soles and offer a really nice soft cushioned support. Regarding comfort on the top part of the foot you don’t need to run the laces through all the lace holes. Additionally if they feel a little tight there is a hole slightly offset that offers a wider gate that made all the difference for me. Buen Camino! ... show more

  • Altra Lone Peaks provide consistency
Like many runners, one of my least favorite things is when a company reboots a product and ruins an already perfect model. Luckily, Altra wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel with their latest incarnation of the Lone Peak series, the 6. Frankly, I bought this color specifically because they were cheaper than the rest by enough to make a difference, but if you use your trail running shoes like I do, it matters little: I've already dusted these babies up a good bit and they maintain their style just fine. Comfort-wise, they're good at what Altra is good at: wide toe box. That said, I have a bunion on my left foot and I've never had any issues with Lone Peaks rubbing before, but these do rub a bit. Fortunately, not enough to be uncomfortable, and if anything the design helps push my bunion back into place. The alleged rock guard isn't too noticeable and I am feeling those Colorado Front Range rocks a bit more than I'd like, but again, the handling and fit of these shoes makes up for the small flaws. This one could maybe be helped with an additional insert, but I'm not going to do that. Gave it a 5 but honestly more like a 4.5. NOTE: I've purchased a third pair of these and am in the process of pretty well breaking my second pair in. Same great results, if not better: I've hit multiple PRs the past two weeks, which is mostly due to training, but seriously, the shoes are great too. ... show more

  • Wide and COMFY!
I'm a cyclist but I travel a LOT for work and don't always have access to a bike, so I decided to make the investment in a good pair of trail runners that would be able to cover most situations I'd ever encounter while on the road. I started with a pair of Saucony Peregrine 12's (wide) and hated how narrow they were, even in the wide size. I next tried these Lone Peaks in the regular width... my toes REJOICE! They are WIDE and very comfortable--plenty of room for your feet to stretch out but not so wide that they feel 'baggy'. I've got about 100 miles on my pair so far (30-ish on the treadmill and another 70 for daily wear, trail walking/running) and they've been absolutely fantastic. Comfortable right out of the box, supportive where they need to be and seem to be plenty sturdy. I'll be buying more of these when I do finally wear them out! ... show more
