  • Woof! BEST (and goofiest) shoes I have ever bought
I've been searching for the Holy Grail of comfort all terrain walkers my whole life. I have several excellent shoes I regularly use which fit well (Fila, Clarks, Timberlands) and have continually tried others, but never found IT. I'm also an engineering cheapskate and never spend over $50 on a shoe. But I was tired of coming up short, read some reviews that said Altra Lone Peaks were the unanimously awesome, with unusual engineering. So I bit the bullet and found a red (!) pair of the Lone Peak 6 on "clearance" for $86 with the 7 Day Try & Buy. Woof. These are simply the most comfortable, pain free, uniquely designed (and goofy!) shoes I have ever worn. A few things: - the "total foot " wide design allows your foot to "spread" at the ball in a natural way that mimics what your foot actually does without shoes. It's a strange but exceedingly natural sensation, with oddly enhanced stability over rough terrain (small rocks, gravel, sand, etc. The term is "foot feel" and it's real and it works. - "Neutral heel" design is that your heel is not elevated, as in every other shoe, which feels odd at first, but which propels you onto the balls of your feet, where you should probably be anyway. Completely counterintuitive to the "high heeled" running shoes of today, but once you try this, there's no going back. Natural and comfortable, in sync with how your foot is actually designed. - I am sensitive to heavy shoes, and these are perhaps the lightest trail runner you will find. Incredibly well cushioned for their weight. - Super high quality materials throughout - the shape and width and color are goofy as all get out, but I've come to see that as a feature, not a bug 😉 - I've tried these on numerous terrains this summer, rocky, sandy, gravelly, hard pack and paved surfaces, all with exceptional performance. The only thing I'll say is these are not at their best on hard pavement or concrete - not that they don't work, but their minimalist nature means they probably won't live long there. Altra has other styles which may work better for that. Net net: if you can stand the goofiness, these are like magic, I've found the Holy Grail. Highest recommendation. ... show more

  • 315Km. On the Camino de Santiago and still kicking!
I purchased these about a month ago for the Camino de Santiago. They are super light and seem to break-in quick enough. I wear sandals often so the zero-drop thing did not seem like a problem. In hindsight though I would have gone with the next model up that offers the extra padding. There are a variety of surfaces on the Camino and had it been primarily dirt it probably would not have been an issue but I had issues with discomfort on the bottom of my feet often enough. These are trail runners and had that been my primary use with them I know they would have been perfect aside from some issues with slippage on wet terrain. After probably now 400+Km. they have stayed intact and are quick to dry and easy to clean. They fit great and are true to size. I however went with a 1/2 size up because I was not able to get my true size. I really had no issues with blisters other than a toe that was compromised going into the Camino. Just keep your feet dry and immediately put some Moleskin on an affected area once you feel a hot spot brewing! Other people on the Camino were very happy with their Komas as well as they have Vibram soles and offer a really nice soft cushioned support. Regarding comfort on the top part of the foot you don’t need to run the laces through all the lace holes. Additionally if they feel a little tight there is a hole slightly offset that offers a wider gate that made all the difference for me. Buen Camino! ... show more

  • Superb shoe especially for wide foot with bunion
This is my second pair of these shoes. They look great with the oxblood detail against the black. I have a painful bunion on my left foot and the toe box is nicely accommodating. I always switch out the insoles for better support. With Orthofeet insoles, these are incredibly comfortable for hiking. Lone Peak 7's seem to be a slightly different design and somewhat narrower so I had to grab another pair of the 6's. Hopefully future models will more closely resemble the Lone Peak 6. ... show more

  • Great fit, great comfort
The best of all the Altras I've owned so far. If you're new to the brand, the different styles fit in broadly different ways. These fit my large wide feet (but not high volume) perfectly. I can hike all day long and feel fresh. ...and I love them at the lab. Standing around instruments all day can be fatiguing on your feet/knees/lower back but these mitigate that. ... show more

  • Impeccable shoe
Size: 12 Color: Black/Grey
I had been a huge Altra fan for many years, until they sold out a few years ago, to a larger company (VFC) who owns many clothing and accessories brands. Once VFC took over, the quality seemed to drop and each model/series seemed to be designed differently, for the worse . I have purchased many of the different models of Altra shoes and while most are not great like they used to be (TIMP, Superior and Escalante) , I have had great luck and satisfaction with the Lone Peak line. I've owned the 4, 4.5 and 5 series and loved them all. When the I could no longer get the 5 series, I was nervous about buying the 6, as it seems like Altra changes each line for the worse, but the Lone Peak 6 is the best yet...incredible shoe. So happy Altra did not cut the quality or feel of the shoe. Impeccable! ... show more

  • A new favorite
I go all in when I find a product that checks all the boxes for me, and these shoes are it. I have used these shoes for daily F3 workouts outside on mixed terrain: concrete, asphalt, grass, dirt, rocks, etc. I’m currently writing this review after using them scrambling over the mountains in Colorado. So far they are my favorite shoe for comfort and performance. Comfort for me means a larger toe box which some find “unattractive”. Eye roll. If you’re looking for “make my feet look skinny” ballerina shoes then look elsewhere. These are excellent, and if you’re worried about looks then check out the colors, they look great. ... show more

  • The best trail shoe I have ever used
The ultra lone Peak six is such a good shoe that I am on my third pair now. Great trip, I mean phenomenal. I’ve been on some extremely loose terrains with these shoes, muddy terrains, Sandy terrains, uneven terrains, and it has not failed me. 5/5 get these shoes now!!!
