  • Woof! BEST (and goofiest) shoes I have ever bought
I've been searching for the Holy Grail of comfort all terrain walkers my whole life. I have several excellent shoes I regularly use which fit well (Fila, Clarks, Timberlands) and have continually tried others, but never found IT. I'm also an engineering cheapskate and never spend over $50 on a shoe. But I was tired of coming up short, read some reviews that said Altra Lone Peaks were the unanimously awesome, with unusual engineering. So I bit the bullet and found a red (!) pair of the Lone Peak 6 on "clearance" for $86 with the 7 Day Try & Buy. Woof. These are simply the most comfortable, pain free, uniquely designed (and goofy!) shoes I have ever worn. A few things: - the "total foot " wide design allows your foot to "spread" at the ball in a natural way that mimics what your foot actually does without shoes. It's a strange but exceedingly natural sensation, with oddly enhanced stability over rough terrain (small rocks, gravel, sand, etc. The term is "foot feel" and it's real and it works. - "Neutral heel" design is that your heel is not elevated, as in every other shoe, which feels odd at first, but which propels you onto the balls of your feet, where you should probably be anyway. Completely counterintuitive to the "high heeled" running shoes of today, but once you try this, there's no going back. Natural and comfortable, in sync with how your foot is actually designed. - I am sensitive to heavy shoes, and these are perhaps the lightest trail runner you will find. Incredibly well cushioned for their weight. - Super high quality materials throughout - the shape and width and color are goofy as all get out, but I've come to see that as a feature, not a bug 😉 - I've tried these on numerous terrains this summer, rocky, sandy, gravelly, hard pack and paved surfaces, all with exceptional performance. The only thing I'll say is these are not at their best on hard pavement or concrete - not that they don't work, but their minimalist nature means they probably won't live long there. Altra has other styles which may work better for that. Net net: if you can stand the goofiness, these are like magic, I've found the Holy Grail. Highest recommendation. ... show more

  • only shoes for me
Doing a great job after at least a hundred miles of running and walking. Sole has good traction, has not detached. Every shoe i have had can not withstand me and my activities, they all tear apart at the sole within a few months. If it does detach im gonna stitch it back together because the sole has plenty of tread left. Point #2 No shoe has ever fit me. My feet are very wide, i have boyght 4E shoes and other barefoot shoes, these are the only ones that i have worn where my toes arent pushed up against the sides. Very comfortable; used in biking, running low to high intensity, hiking. they are not waterproof, but they drain well, and i had no problem running in the pouring rain with them even though the shoes were soaked and so was I. ... show more

  • Definitely wide
Size: 10.5 Wide Color: Black/Grey
First pair was too large, returned for half size less fit is perfect for fred flintstone feet, I changed the insoles for a bit more cushioning much more comfortable now , hard to find insoles wide enough though, I wish the shoes heel around the back of foot was higher they are easily pulled off if the shoe gets caught on something while walking or hiking, they get a flat like we use to say in school, I removed one star fir this although they really are comfortable to walk in, I use them for working out in the garden and have some steep hillsides to climb around on and the waffle soles have excellent grip on the hard soil but they do need to be tied up pretty tight or my foot slides inside the shoes , pricey shoes but are the best sturdy lightweight shoes I’ve found for a ee wide foot and with the grippy soles they work great for my needs ... show more

  • 315Km. On the Camino de Santiago and still kicking!
I purchased these about a month ago for the Camino de Santiago. They are super light and seem to break-in quick enough. I wear sandals often so the zero-drop thing did not seem like a problem. In hindsight though I would have gone with the next model up that offers the extra padding. There are a variety of surfaces on the Camino and had it been primarily dirt it probably would not have been an issue but I had issues with discomfort on the bottom of my feet often enough. These are trail runners and had that been my primary use with them I know they would have been perfect aside from some issues with slippage on wet terrain. After probably now 400+Km. they have stayed intact and are quick to dry and easy to clean. They fit great and are true to size. I however went with a 1/2 size up because I was not able to get my true size. I really had no issues with blisters other than a toe that was compromised going into the Camino. Just keep your feet dry and immediately put some Moleskin on an affected area once you feel a hot spot brewing! Other people on the Camino were very happy with their Komas as well as they have Vibram soles and offer a really nice soft cushioned support. Regarding comfort on the top part of the foot you don’t need to run the laces through all the lace holes. Additionally if they feel a little tight there is a hole slightly offset that offers a wider gate that made all the difference for me. Buen Camino! ... show more

  • Full Toebox, Medium Cushion, Excellent Traction
I bought these off of a recommendation from an actual runner, which I am not, for use as a trail shoe for light mountain hiking during travel. They're super lightweight, pack well in carry-on luggage and performed satisfactorily on packed gravel, blacktop, bigger, loose rocks and tree roots. Ankle support is non existent and they're not water resistant or waterproof, but I did use them in packed snow and they worked just fine with my socks stayed dry. Loving the full toebox (no bunched up toes), and the even plane between ball of foot and heel (takes a little getting used to). I would recommend these for folks looking for a similar application as mine and would buy again (I actually own 3 pair of these now!) ... show more
