  • Great all-around shoe
I needed a shoe that I could wear out and about and also could go into the woods and hike a nice trail. I'm a bit of an overpacker, so having a shoe that would serve multiple purposes for me really helps reduce what I'm carrying. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this shoe, and overall, it was rated quite well. My expectations were fairly high, and this shoe truly knocked it out of the park. First, they're incredibly lightweight, which is important for both usage and packing. They're attractive looking and match most casual outfits. I wear a size 8, and ordered a size 8. Perfect fit. The toe box is spacious and the shoe fits perfectly. The light grey is a nice, simple look, but I do worry about how easy they'll be to clean. They've been pretty good at fending off dirt, even as I tromped through the woods after a rain. I need ankle support on most hikes, so I likely won't wear these on my longer or more difficult hikes, but for an easy hike, I'll definitely choose them. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't need ankle support, I'd wear them for all hikes, but I'm far too clumsy not to have mid-height boots at the least. The tread is impressive, and I definitely believe they'll be great for any type of walking I choose to wear them for. I have flat feet, so I sometimes struggle with shoes, but these are the right amount of support. My feet haven't hurt once since wearing them. I've even started using them on my walking pad at home. They aren't waterproof, so I'll have to keep that in mind for rainy days. But if you're looking for a light-weight trail running shoe, this could be a great choice for you! ... show more

  • The perfect hiking shoe! Not so much for the Lone peak 8’s though.
I never knew how much I needed a wide toe box in my shoes until I started wearing the Altra Lone Peaks. Now, I can’t find true comfort in any other shoe! I’ve tried wide shoes in the past. In fact, my hiking boots are wide. But the problem with wide shoes is that the whole shoe is wider than regular shoes, not just the toe box. But my foot is only wide around the ball of my foot. My mid-foot and heel areas are not wide. So wide shoes always feel big on me. I never realized how much regular shoes squeeze the ball of my foot, and become uncomfortable after a while. Now I notice it in every shoe. These shoes are not like typical wide shoes, as these are only wide in the toe box. I guess, according to shoe manufacturers, I’m abnormal, since no one else makes shoes with such a wide toe box. Even other styles of Altra do not compare to the Lone Peaks, which have Altra’s widest toe box. The Lone Peaks are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet, not only for the ball area of my foot, but I also love having plenty of room for my toes to spread out while hiking. I can actually feel my toes working to grip the uneven trail surface, which I wasn’t sure at first that I liked, because I actually felt like my foot muscles were getting a work-out . . . A new sensation for me. But after hiking in Lone Peaks for several years now, I absolutely love it! I feel like my feet are stronger! Who knew?! Anyway, I do have to mention that I have two pairs of the Lone Peak 6’s, and one pair of the Lone Peak 7’s. I tried on a pair of the Lone Peak 8’s, and was a little disappointed, because the sole of the shoe was not as squishy and comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. Turns out, they added a rock plate into the soles of the 8’s, which makes them not as comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. I don’t know why manufacturers always feel like they have to fix what isn’t broken, and in the process, they mess up a good thing. I will still probably end up buying a pair of the 8’s though, just because I love the wide toe box that much. ... show more

  • perfect! And true to size.
Size: 9 Color: Tan
my kiddo turned me onto these the first 10 minutes of walking in them felt comfortable around the box toe, but I have a sciatic problem and I felt a little achy. He told me it took a minute to break them in. I followed his advice. Use them for 15 minutes on my next walk and realized I had no pain. In fact these energize me so much that if I have to go anywhere and be on my feet for a long period of time I know that actually I will be able to sail through it because for some reason it assist your walking and propels you forward the fact that your feet aren’t being squeezed, which I didn’t realize in my other shoes were so much also helped reduce my tiredness. I cannot recommend these enough. True to size. ... show more

  • Comfortable trail running shoe with wide toe
I’ve had these Altra Trail running shoes for almost a year. In the Spring I used them hiking in Arizona and in the fall we hiked the Adirondacks, Shenandoah and The Smokies. The traction is great, they’re light, and best of all the toe is wide so I don’t have the blisters on my little toe! I sprayed the shoes with Camp Dry so they were water resistant. These are meant for trail running but they are great for light hiking when you don’t want to drag out the big heavy boots. I think they have held up well for the amount of miles on them, and I love the colors they offer. My only negative: I do think they were pricey. ... show more

  • Best trail shoes!
Size: 9 Color: Tan
Delayed review bc I wanted some real-world testing. I wore these hiking the 4-day Inca Trail in Peru and WOW they were great! I had previously worn Merrell hiking boots, thinking I wanted a stiffer, more supportive shoe. However, after trying them out on trails I discovered that I did not actually like or need that - on the recommendation of a friend I got these Altra’s instead. They’re so comfortable, flexible, breathable, and have amazing grip. They were perfect for hiking the variety of terrain I encountered in Peru, particularly all of the downhill. Absolutely recommend! ... show more
