    • The perfect hiking shoe! Not so much for the Lone peak 8’s though.

I never knew how much I needed a wide toe box in my shoes until I started wearing the Altra Lone Peaks. Now, I can’t find true comfort in any other shoe! I’ve tried wide shoes in the past. In fact, my hiking boots are wide. But the problem with wide shoes is that the whole shoe is wider than regular shoes, not just the toe box. But my foot is only wide around the ball of my foot. My mid-foot and heel areas are not wide. So wide shoes always feel big on me. I never realized how much regular shoes squeeze the ball of my foot, and become uncomfortable after a while. Now I notice it in every shoe. These shoes are not like typical wide shoes, as these are only wide in the toe box. I guess, according to shoe manufacturers, I’m abnormal, since no one else makes shoes with such a wide toe box. Even other styles of Altra do not compare to the Lone Peaks, which have Altra’s widest toe box. The Lone Peaks are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet, not only for the ball area of my foot, but I also love having plenty of room for my toes to spread out while hiking. I can actually feel my toes working to grip the uneven trail surface, which I wasn’t sure at first that I liked, because I actually felt like my foot muscles were getting a work-out . . . A new sensation for me. But after hiking in Lone Peaks for several years now, I absolutely love it! I feel like my feet are stronger! Who knew?! Anyway, I do have to mention that I have two pairs of the Lone Peak 6’s, and one pair of the Lone Peak 7’s. I tried on a pair of the Lone Peak 8’s, and was a little disappointed, because the sole of the shoe was not as squishy and comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. Turns out, they added a rock plate into the soles of the 8’s, which makes them not as comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. I don’t know why manufacturers always feel like they have to fix what isn’t broken, and in the process, they mess up a good thing. I will still probably end up buying a pair of the 8’s though, just because I love the wide toe box that much. ... show more

    • Great all-around shoe
I needed a shoe that I could wear out and about and also could go into the woods and hike a nice trail. I'm a bit of an overpacker, so having a shoe that would serve multiple purposes for me really helps reduce what I'm carrying. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this shoe, and overall, it was rated quite well. My expectations were fairly high, and this shoe truly knocked it out of the park. First, they're incredibly lightweight, which is important for both usage and packing. They're attractive looking and match most casual outfits. I wear a size 8, and ordered a size 8. Perfect fit. The toe box is spacious and the shoe fits perfectly. The light grey is a nice, simple look, but I do worry about how easy they'll be to clean. They've been pretty good at fending off dirt, even as I tromped through the woods after a rain. I need ankle support on most hikes, so I likely won't wear these on my longer or more difficult hikes, but for an easy hike, I'll definitely choose them. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't need ankle support, I'd wear them for all hikes, but I'm far too clumsy not to have mid-height boots at the least. The tread is impressive, and I definitely believe they'll be great for any type of walking I choose to wear them for. I have flat feet, so I sometimes struggle with shoes, but these are the right amount of support. My feet haven't hurt once since wearing them. I've even started using them on my walking pad at home. They aren't waterproof, so I'll have to keep that in mind for rainy days. But if you're looking for a light-weight trail running shoe, this could be a great choice for you! ... show more

    • Excellent walking/hiking shoes for the traveler on the go!
I purchased these tennis shoes after reading a Wirecutter review of this brand. I have struggled for a long time to find the right tennis shoes, but these are it! I have long toes, and they tend to get pinched easily and rubbed the wrong way. Especially in hiking shoes. I needed really good walking shoes for a nearly three week trip to Europe. Historically, I’ve had to bring mole skin, bandaids, etc. for the inevitable blisters, and generally speaking my feet are beyond tired well before I am on these kinds of excursions. I am amazed to say that these shoes made it so that I did not get any blisters. My feet did get tired, but only after walking a bout 25k steps a day. So I don’t think it was the shoes’ fault! I was able to use them for hikes we did in Switzerland, and city walking in Amsterdam, and they were fantastic. I wore them pretty much every day, and they held up beautifully. The wider toe box seems to have been what I’ve needed all this time to give my long toes room to move about a bit more. I’m so excited to have found a shoe that truly felt amazing and worked for me! ... show more

    • I love this shoe!
I've been a fan of Altra hiking shoes for years due to the wide toe box. I have an issue with my little toe rubbing a blister on the toe next to it, and being an avid backpacker, blisters are a no-no. The Lone Peak has a toe box that has alleviated this problem. My toes can spread out and not touch one another. I also like that the shoe has a zero drop, so your feet are in the position as if you were walking barefoot. They have the grippiest sole of any brand of hiking shoes I have used over the years. These shoes dry quickly when wet, enabling me to wade streams where the stepping stones are too far apart for my comfort without taking the time to remove them. Within an hour the shoes are usually dry. It was great that these were on sale when I went looking for replacements for my old Lone Peaks. The only drawback is that they are minimalist shoes, therefore they do not last as long as heavier hiking shoes, but that is not a deal breaker for me. I don't need to use leg weights (heavier boots) when I hike...my pack is heavy enough.😆 ... show more

This is the 2nd pair of Altra Lone Peak 7 shoes I have purchased, and I like them for the roomy toe box and overall comfort. The arch support is better than most, and I wear them for walking exercise and just all-around sneakers. On me, this 2nd pair is a little short in the length and so I'm returning them. Also, the shoelaces are too short for a wide foot with a high arch! By the time the shoe stretches over my foot, there's barely enough shoelace left over to tie. But overall, it's a good shoe, and it's made perfect with longer shoelaces! ... show more

    • As Awesome as Lone Peak 6
For starters, I want to say I absolutely loved my ALTRA lone peak 6s. I have fairly flat and wide feet due to running around barefoot as a kid (it was the 90s and outside was the place to be) and the arch support and wide toe box were perfect. Before buying them, I was wearing Hoka Cliftons which resulted in a very painful tailor's bunion. So I switched to the 6 and have never had any issues with my feet. Fast forward 2 years after hiking miles and miles through the TN mountains and loving them so much that I wore them everyday, I decided it was time for another pair. Saying that, they held up beautifully, I just wore the padding inside down. When I looked up the 6s again, I found they had went up majorly in price or were out of stock since they were the older "model". I tried to venture out to other brands, and every time I tried a pair, I was disappointed---none of them were as comfortable. It was also incredibly hard to part ways with these shoes (dramatic, I know). I decided to stop being stubborn and order the newer model, these, the 7s. I went back and forth for awhile because of the reviews and I couldn't decide on a color. I wasn't a fan of any of the colors but I ultimately went with the tan and light blue ones, they are pretty. Upon receiving the shoes and trying them on, I was ecstatic. They felt as comfortable as the 6s that I cherished. Those of you who are hikers know how important finding a pair of supportive shoes is and these are it! I still wear my 6s for nostalgic purposes and because the navy goes better with some clothes. Needless to say, I love the shoes. My only issue would be the colors, I would have liked a solid color or different shades of the same color on the shoe. However, this isn't a big deal and definitely not worth knocking off any stars since they will eventually because covered in dirt. 10/10 would recommend. ... show more

These are my third try at an foot shaped shoe... I absolutely LOVE them! My first pair of wide toe shoes had me hooked on the idea. Unfortunately they didn't last long. They began falling apart after a few months :( The toe box was just wide enough to where my little toes weren't crammed, but i still loved them more than any other shoe I tried before... These Altra Lone Peaks are SO MUCH BETTER. The toe box is much wider than my last brand. They're super comfortable. No breaking in needed. They have the perfect amount of support and hold my heel in nicely. I love how they feel when going a couple of miles of the trails. Great grip, no rubbing, decently breathable, and my toes have room roam lol. I'm an 8.5 and the 8.5 fit perfect. I have a pretty narrow heel and a much wider toe area. After 32 years of wearing the wrong kind of shoe my little toes had become very curved and smooshed into the next toe. I've noticed my next smallest toe has started becoming more bent and that's when I realized I NEEDED something else. Instead of just settling for whatever was "OK". Thankfully these were on sale but unfortunately... I'm HOOKED! I certainly recommend and will most definitely buy again.     • Comfort with Durability issues. Heel support collapsed.
When new, this was a 5 star shoe. But now after almost a year, the backs of the shoes have weirdly collapsed and lost their structure, causing heel slip and blisters. While the wide toe bed is comfortable, the durability is lacking.
