  • Hesitation to purchase?
Size: 11 Color: Olive/Willow
I bought these shoes for my boyfriend. I’ve been wearing Lone Peaks for a while now and can’t talk any more highly about the exceptional comfort I’ve found in these shoes myself. I saw these 4.5’s were being closed out at our local show store while my boyfriend and I were out to get him new steel-toed work boots. It was finally my chance to get his feet into the comfort of these shoes. They had only size 9 and 11.5 available to try on. He couldn’t get his foot into those 9’s and he felt too much room in the 11.5’s but instantly felt the utter comfortability I’d been going on about forever. He sneakily thought about buying these shoes it over and over again for the better part of three months and was hesitant as he’s been using Keen or Oboz hiking boots for years and while he knew he was due for a new pair of boots/shoes for hiking, he wasn’t certain he wanted to pull the trigger on trail runners. I’d convinced him to go into a different specialty shoe store to be properly fitted when he spoke to me of his hesitation. He has wide width feet and believed he was typically a size 10-11 depending on the shoe or boot brand. Once he was sized, it was suggested he opt for an 11 and after trying every size he believed would fit him best, he agreed 11’s were the winner. However, the store didn’t have the 4.5s as they’d listed on their website. The 5.0’s also fit a tad bit tighter than the 4.5’s. I bought him these 4.5’s in an 11 because they were the colors and style he wanted and hiking season is upon us here in New England. He is genuinely the most delighted with these shoes and will be a loyal customer to Altra Lone Peaks going forward. As a woman with a shoe size of 7.5 typically because of my feet’s width, I’ve personally found that size 7s fit me most comfortably. I found these shoes and the brand when trying to find a zero drop shoe like my New Balance Minimus I’ve used for years. I did want something similar in a boot form. I found these trail runners with their excellent “Bear Claw” grips on the bottom, Rock Guards, Gator Grips and “Foot Shape” to actually check off more boxes than I expected I’d want or need. I’d honestly prefer barefoot so not to feel like my balance is always forced in one direction more than another. By the way, who knew “Foot Shaped” would only recent be an option in purchasing shoes. It only seems logical. Other note: both my boyfriend and I have a longer second toe (forward sitting in a shoe) than our largest toes. I think this in part what makes the “Foot Shape” so comfortable. Again, I have Lone Peak 4.0’s - 5’s. 4.0’s are the loosest fitting from what I’ve found. 4.5’s are looser fitting in the toe box than the 5’s for both mail and female. I also own the 4.5 mid-ankle all weather boots and they are significantly tighter all around which doesn’t make for the most comfort with thick wool hiking socks - just in case you’re looking at buying one generation or style over another. Hope this helps someone! ... show more

  • First zero drop shoe and first Altras
Size: 12 Color: Olive/Willow
I decided to get myself a pair of quality hiking shoes. I usually wear budget trail runners like the Asic Gel-Venture 5/6. These are my thoughts in comparing the two. Use – Light/ultralight backpacking, Weekend warrior, Day hikes, Daily use. Zero Drop – I noticed my legs needed to adjust for the change. It has made uphill slightly more difficult which is not a bad thing and downhill slightly more comfortable. I notice that my stride has change while wearing them and my foot rolls each step instead of striking on the heal. The lip on the back of the shoe may be contributing to this. The shoe good – I took them on a 26 mile look in the Smokeys and they performed well. There were many different terrains including mud, rocks, powder snow, slush, and ice. Traction and durability are good so far. They were comfortable out of the box with very little break-in required. They dried fast by the fire and did not melt or shrink. Gaiter loop and Velcro held my OR Spark-plug gaiters well even though the Velcro faces the wrong way for the flap. I just had to fold it over and it worked well enough. Toe box is good. No blisters. Lacing system kept my foot from sliding around. The shoe not so good - I have noticed a band across the top of the shoe that I cannot loosen the laces enough to release. It feels like the laces are cranked down right near the bottom of the lace section (near the gaiter loop). It is not an issue while hiking as the laces are tightened to match that of the band. Altra brand gaiters in my size (large) did not fit the shoes. There was too much slack for the front hook to stay attached and debris could get into the sides. Rock guard/shank seems a little soft and cause some fatigue. This may just be something my feet need to get used to. Conclusion – So far, I am a fan or zero drop and the Loan Peaks. I find myself wearing my hiking shoes everywhere. ... show more

  • Perfect.
I've used these shoes extensively as my daily drivers since March of 2021. The quality is so great that the special insoles I bought worn down before the shoes! If I were to buy another insole, these shoes would last me another year or two! Unfortunately these shoes are discontinued, so I'll be purchasing the Lone Peak 7's now. Looking forward to them! ... show more
