  • Very Thorough
My husband is interested in the Lewis and Clark Expedition having read their journal. Next he wants to travel the route and this book has a wealth of information. There are many books on the subject available but this one seems to have it all, the route, their camp sites, tidbits from their journal, monuments and museums honoring them and additional sites to see along the way. We highly encourage getting this book if you are interested in traveling the route. ... show more

  • Not an ordinary history book!
Have you ever tried to envision what it was like to travel to unknown, uncharted territory? Lewis and Clark in 1804 were instructed by the President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, to do just that. This excellent guide takes the reader to the sites and locations they wrote about in their journals. Along with excellent maps are the actual words written by the pair as they ventured into unknown territory. The Louisiana Purchase had just opened new areas for settlement, but the only people who had been there before were the indigenous people who called it home and the hunters and trappers who made their living from the bounty of the land. Stephen Ambrose, the noted author and historian, says "this is quite simply, the best guide book to the Lewis and Clark Trail." While most people will not venture to follow the trail in its entirety, the book can be used to break it down to manageable trips, trips that could be the dream of a lifetime or just for the curious. History summaries and advice on Expedition sites to visit, other places to see, where to eat or sleep, and tips for enjoying modern travel on the trail. 59 detailed color maps. All in all, a fantastic visual trip to areas you may not be familiar with whether you actually take the trip in person or take it vicariously by reading this book. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in history of our nation. ... show more
