PAINTING: Hummingbird and Hibiscus SUMMARY: Would I paint or buy this one again as an intermediate PBNer? NO. It takes too much work using more advanced painting techniques and potentially some alternative (unprovided) colors to make this painting something I'd be willing to hang or gift. To me, a PBN should match it's advertise image (this one does not - the ad photo is the source painting the PBN was designed off of or was done by an advanced artist), and require only minimally more mature techniques to make something you'd be proud to frame (e.g., blending of areas like backgrounds). PROS: 1. Comes with a more than adequate amount of paint (assuming you are painting at the right, creamy consistency) for multi-layer coverage, and for dry-on-dry (my preferred method due to laziness) or wet-on-wet blending of key areas, such as the background, flower petals, etc. 2. The hibiscus (yellow/orange tropical flowers and their leaves) come out quite nice in this painting, at least to me... on completion I was quite pleased with the left half of this painting - though they are not the painting's focal point, sigh. NEUTRALS: 1. As with all PBNs where paint arrives in pots vs. tubes - even if in plastic packaging with the air removed - your paint will likely require light to moderate thinning from drying on the shelf over months, which is fine. 2. Numbers are easy to read, but as with most PBNs, you'll benefit from a white acrylic paint pen (and they're cheap) to cover numbers prior to painting for lighter colors (unless you enjoy painting 5-6 coats of white or very light yellow <s>). CONS: 1. The product photo on this page is of the ORIGINAL ARTWORK the PBN is based upon OR was painted by an expert using far more techniques than us PBNers are familiar with. In retrospect, that should have been obvious to me (how else could you get that sense of feathers), but maybe I needed more coffee before hitting BUY. ;-) 2. I generally apply a minimum of two coats for any and every PBN color - and wow, when you do that, the background sky colors are just bizarre, even with nice edge blending using the dry-on-dry technique. It truly is pretty unattractive and unnatural, IMHO. Using a light pink for the "white" of the side of the bird's eye just look weird to me, as well. 3. Oh that bird... that poor bird. As noted, it's just a blocky bird that looks SUPER PBN'd, even with some blending. You really need to be willing to embrace some more advanced painting techniques (I did do a bit of YouTube searching) to try to make it even halfway decent.

I am still working on it. It will be great when done. The only problem is that the numbers are very small so very hard to see them. I will finish eventually but can't do all the time as like I said the numbers are so small. I would not give to a kid as more for an adult.

Good detail for a PBN, and the canvas was sized perfectly, which is not always the case. Some of the colors were just a little bit too watery, but that is easily controlled. This is still a work in progress, but I am enjoying it so far, and what has been painted looks pretty good.

This painting was very difficult to read the numbering system. I even enlarged the systaltic, but it didn't really help. Finally gave up and just painting what I thought should be there. Will not buy again.

This will be a beautiful painting. I purchased it and 3 other’s for Christmas. The plans were to have the women in our family get together a couple of times a month to paint and enjoy one another’s company. This one I gave to my 90 year old mother. She did not have the dexterity for being able to do the tiny spaces. Just keep this in mind for elderly persons. The canvas came in a plastic bag folded several times, so the folds had to be stretched over a styrofoam type of a board, but the wrinkles relaxed after a while. Another company, who I also ordered from, rolled the canvas and it arrived with no wrinkles! Just a though for this company!
