I bought this book before using ableton, and it really prepared me. From the very basics to complicated ideas and concepts, it carried me through using the software. I have tried other ableton books, and this is definitely the way to go. Its also nice that the author is a teacher at one of the first schools to certify students in ableton live. Good but basic

I recently started using Ableton Live 8 Suite as the main DAW for my home studio. This is an incredible program that can be used in a plethora of ways. I selected this book in hopes that it would help me learn all of the ins and outs of the software and give me some good tips on Live implementation. This is a well written book but it does not go much deeper than the manual that came with my software. By the time the book arrived I had already learned just about every thing in it by reading the manual, watching online videos, doing the tutorials included with Live, and playing around with the software. To be fair I am a professional engineer and have a lot of experience in audio recording, having worked with many different platforms over the years. If you are just getting started with Live and digital recording this may be a good book to read. However, for anyone related experience it may not be worth it. ... show more

Good book
I know ableton 9 is already out but I bought this book 6 months ago, once you get into it, its pretty well thought out, they way he lays it out makes perfect sense and ease of understanding, and I tend to remember what I have read, I don't seem to need to reference it much. Wish the graphics were in color, the B&W makes it look borring. Recommended for beginners like me. ... show more

This helps you get acquainted and used to the interface and it's depth but there is little hand holding in this book. It's more of a reference guide in my opinion, and that's alright. It tries to explain every concept it brings up, but assumes you will practice and understand some of it on your own. It doesn't necessarily teach you the technique or workflow behind making a song directly, but it is all there if you break the concepts down. ... show more

The only Ableton Live worth owning.

I own several books targeted at Ableton Live and can confidently say this is far and away the best. It could be used as textbook for an classroom environment. While other books might spent 1/3rd of their pages discussing irrelevant and quickly dated things like what computer hardware to purchase this is entirely about Ableton Live, how it works, and how to get the most out of this amazing piece of software. ... show more

Whoa!
Not only was this the best guide I've ever used, but I've had a chance to see the author perform and he doesn't just talk about Ableton - he maximizes its potential. This IS the definitive guide to Ableton Live 8.
