Description

Explore the mysteries of the universe without ever leaving your home! Bill Bryson takes on the world of science and answers questions big and small, perfect for curious readers looking to learn outside of the classroom! Did you know that: • Every atom in your body has almost certainly passed through several stars and been part of millions of organisms on its way to being you? • If you are an average-sized kid, you have enough potential energy inside you to explode with the force of several hydrogen bombs? And—What happened to dinosaurs? How big is the universe? Why are oceans salty? Is a meteor going to hit us? Tackling everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bill Bryson’s inimitable storytelling skill makes the why, how, and, just as importantly, the who of scientific discovery entertaining and accessible for young readers. • Perfect book for a curious kid
Format: Hardcover
I bought this for my 7-year-old daughter. She is an advanced reader and has a strong interest in science, so I thought this would be right up her alley. Was it ever! She's toted "A Really Short History of Nearly Everything" to school every day for the last week so she has it for free reading time. The illustrations and photographs are high-quality and interesting, and the explanations are clear and factual. My daughter has needed to ask the meaning of a few words that are beyond her current vocabulary, but that's a great way to learn them. I see this book getting a lot of use over the next few years. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. ... show more

  • Super overview of some big ideas.
Format: Hardcover
This book contains some great, good-humored images that help to explain really big ideas. Protein formation, the cosmos, and the connection between currents and weather patterns are just some of the concepts touched upon in attractive two-page spreads. Our family is using the book as a "jumping off" point for my son's sixth grade science while in home school. He reads a spread and then hits the internet to research some key idea that has caught his fancy. He's been able to use some of the things he's learned in the book to connect to other content areas, too. For example, he commented that Greenland would probably be warmer if the Atlantic Ocean's salinity wasn't so high (He was thorough in his explanation, but it was quite involved for the purposes of this review). I would highly recommend the book. It's got high-level concepts written in the perfect language for middle-schoolers to grasp. ... show more

  • Interesting book
Format: Hardcover
I read (via audio CD) the adult version of this book and found it interesting. It covers the beginning of the universe and our place in it to how humans got to be as we are, and has some great insights (like in the beginning where they note that we are all collections of atoms that happened to get together to form us, and the same atoms used to be other things and will be other things again). It shows how "science" is as much an art and political and silly as it is "science", stripping away some of the awe without removing the wonder of the discoveries made before "modern technology" and our advantages today. All in all, great for some interesting knowledge and useful perspective. This version is for younger readers. Our kids (10-15) weren't sure about it when they got it for Christmas, but they are picking at it and getting drawn in and I'm sure will read it cover to cover before long. Other toys are too distracting right now, but they do find it interesting and are reading it as kids do! ... show more

  • Great addition to the original book
Format: Hardcover
Not sure what more I can say that other reviewers have not already said about the book. I thought this was an excellent book, filled with lots of interesting data, some of which I kind of already knew, and a lot of which I didn’t. I found the book so interesting that I purchased another copy for a co-worker who also shares a similar desire to learn more about nearly everything. I also bought the Kids version for both myself and the co-worker, so we can share it with our little ones. ... show more

  • First grade grandson devoured the book!
Format: Hardcover
I had enjoyed reading Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. I have 7 grandchildren and decided they might enjoy reading A Really Short History of Nearly Everything with colorful, fun illustrations. Even though my first grader grandson in particular had always had a fascination with science, I was surprised and proud of how he devoured the book, reading parts of it out loud to his parents. He was so taken with it that he finished reading it cover to cover in a few weeks often asking mom or dad what a new word meant. He learned about many exciting science areas of study but also vastly improved his reading skills in general. The other grandchildren were interested in the book but maybe not as much as Graham. However My sixth grade granddaughter also completed reading the book and even recommends it to her friends. ... show more
