Description

Explore the mysteries of the universe without ever leaving your home! Bill Bryson takes on the world of science and answers questions big and small, perfect for curious readers looking to learn outside of the classroom! Did you know that: • Every atom in your body has almost certainly passed through several stars and been part of millions of organisms on its way to being you? • If you are an average-sized kid, you have enough potential energy inside you to explode with the force of several hydrogen bombs? And—What happened to dinosaurs? How big is the universe? Why are oceans salty? Is a meteor going to hit us? Tackling everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bill Bryson’s inimitable storytelling skill makes the why, how, and, just as importantly, the who of scientific discovery entertaining and accessible for young readers. • A great gift for a middle grade student.
It was a donation for a middle grade child in our Christmas gift program. A bit challenging with good information.

  • First grade grandson devoured the book!
I had enjoyed reading Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. I have 7 grandchildren and decided they might enjoy reading A Really Short History of Nearly Everything with colorful, fun illustrations. Even though my first grader grandson in particular had always had a fascination with science, I was surprised and proud of how he devoured the book, reading parts of it out loud to his parents. He was so taken with it that he finished reading it cover to cover in a few weeks often asking mom or dad what a new word meant. He learned about many exciting science areas of study but also vastly improved his reading skills in general. The other grandchildren were interested in the book but maybe not as much as Graham. However My sixth grade granddaughter also completed reading the book and even recommends it to her friends. ... show more

  • They fit very well for what I wanted.
I took this book to my husband who had cancer in the hospital. He said he really liked the parts he got to read. Unfortunately, he passed away a few days later, but he really enjoyed it. He was a heavy read and had all kinds of books on different topics. Thank you

  • Super overview of some big ideas.
This book contains some great, good-humored images that help to explain really big ideas. Protein formation, the cosmos, and the connection between currents and weather patterns are just some of the concepts touched upon in attractive two-page spreads. Our family is using the book as a "jumping off" point for my son's sixth grade science while in home school. He reads a spread and then hits the internet to research some key idea that has caught his fancy. He's been able to use some of the things he's learned in the book to connect to other content areas, too. For example, he commented that Greenland would probably be warmer if the Atlantic Ocean's salinity wasn't so high (He was thorough in his explanation, but it was quite involved for the purposes of this review). I would highly recommend the book. It's got high-level concepts written in the perfect language for middle-schoolers to grasp. ... show more
