There are several reasons I love this book. For one, the songs are very familiar and are pleasing to play. These are instumental works so you get to play it the way it is performed, instead or incorporating the melody into the right-hand piano parts. The chord progressions are very interesting (flat 9th chords, flat 5th, etc.) especially the way they are voiced. You can see an example at the sheet music plus web site. There is another version of this book with parts that are easier to play. I have only seen one sample page from that book (Linus and Lucy) and in the other book it is played in C major and doesn't have the left-hand rhythmic anticipations (first note begins an eight note early) while this book has the song in E-flat, which is a little harder to play but sounds richer. I have a QRS player piano roll of Linus and Lucy and I noticed that it matches the Christas CD better. The song on the CD goes through the main part of the song three times with two swinging (hard to play) refrains. The two refrains are a little different, with the second one being more dissonant than the first. The book documents only the second. The bass line for the refrains are simple walking quarter notes while the piano roll has a rag-time style alternating eight note bass notes and chords. This is fine by me because this is plenty hard to play as it is (triplets over quarter notes, etc.). At any rate, check out the sample at Sheet Music Plus to see if the difficulty matches you ability. If so, this is a great purchase. ... show more

I have given this book as a gift to my advanced piano students. Pieces are definitely not easy, and sound just like the soundtrack to the Charlie Brown Christmas movies.

    • It Not A Piano Solo ONLY Book
Format: Paperback
Great book, but I gave it only 4 stars. It is clearly listed as "Piano Solo" which means the music is arranged for a full 88 key Piano with one person playing. But "Christmas Time is Here" (the principal song in this book) is clearly for ORGAN not Piano. Look at the 5th bar bass stave alone: Not many virtuosos even can play an interval from F2 to A3 with the left hand. I also, elsewhere, saw rests in line with other bass notes which usually means two part (person/hand) harmony... that is NOT solo. Studying the piece a bit further I realized that in bar 1: "With pedal" means here "with Bass Pedal(s)". In a Piano solo piece, to most of us, pedal means the "Fote/Sustain", "Sustenuto", or "Piano/Una Corda" pedal... and usually meaning the sustain pedal. Pianos don't have Bass Pedals. But many organs do. I had re-arrange the entire piece for true Piano Solo or synthesizer with no bass Pedals. Normally one would simply not play the lowest pedal notes, but when I did that, the harmony was off - not enough key root in the bass. So one would then only play the lower bass notes (and not play on the lowest non-existent pedal notes). This worked, but I have to move many of the lower bass notes up an octave to sound brighter as the piece should sound. For those of you learning music, this book may not be for you... there are a lot of Jazz chords and the changes and progressions are very much in more jazz oriented themes. Most of the music is from Vince Guaraldi after all. If you ever encounter a piece that is supposed to be arranged for Piano, look for clues as you play it that make you think it may be for an organ: Two hands and one or two feet in the bass. It's not always obvious. Then figure out the best way to leave out the bass pedal notes. As far as the voice parts of the songs (only 3 songs in this book have them) beginners will find them easier to play. But "My Little Drum" has only lyrics in the first few bars only. Also, Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" does not include lyrics at all in this book (sad). Neither did O'Tannebaum, possibly because these lyrics were not sung in the show, they left them out in the song book. So, not much in here for beginners. I play keyboards and bass, so this book may help a small band but of course there are no drum lines in this "Piano Solo" book. The authors of this book clearly found this music in an archive somewhere but didn't realize it was arranged for organ... not quite the same as a piano solo. Both have music that looks very much alike, but there are some subtle impossibilities from organ to solo piano. ... show more

Here is all the wonderful Vince Guaraldi music from the famous Peanuts Christmas special, "A Charlie Brown Christmas". You don't get the improvisations, or of course, the trio accompaniment. But the piano part sounds wonderful, and with some practice, sounds so much like the music from the show that it is very rewarding to play. As far as I know, every number is included, especially the famous "Linus and Lucy". What a blast to play! The format is good, large pages, clean, dark printing, easy to read. This is not easy piano by any means. Everybody's grading system varies, but my estimate is that these pieces are firmly in the intermediate level, with some pieces possibly early advanced. If you play at that level, and love the music from that heart-warming show, you will not regret your purchase. I don't think you have to be an expert in jazz at all to play this music, as the pieces are so familiar you probably will find you fairly quickly pick up the feel for how to make it sound good. Did not Bing's "Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum" ever seem conspicuous when he saddled alongside he-who-is-both-man-and woman's-best-friend? I distinctly recall my father's rather conservative and languidly Bavarian response to Mr. Diamond Dogs, warning me over and over and over again never to wear eye make-up, let alone a purple parka. I tried to correct my father, "But father, he wears a cross as he sings. Look, he even wears a sports coat!" Of course, he could care less as he scowled, "Ahh! But's what's this peace-on-earth crap while he sings Little Drummer Boy?!?" He then proceeded to hit me in the head with a rack of lamb and ranted about the misunderstood merits of white phosphorous. Ever since then, it's been "Pa-Rum-Pum-Pum" and Vince just about nailed it, saving me the torture of having to sit through the likes of Danny Kaye's frightening smile and justifications for clandestine military actions like "Operation Northwoods." I was just fine with the piles of dust spewing from Pig Pen and the slipshod tannenbaum to the sounds of Piano. Drums. Bass. So simple. We thought we were safe. Fast forward to my millennial days as a father in my own right, and juggling pop-culture logic, and "playdates" and the ongoing search for cookware that is free from BPH, and arguing with my piano-playing daughter that what Justin Bieber did to this fine little tune was the worst of all abominations! Akin to a steaming bowl of bile and melted Necco Wafers! Was I to become like my father? Was there any Christmas magic that would save me from that young punk and his plastic death grip on my daughter and the rest of our nation's tweens? Did I have to tally up reasons for hatred? Or could I just spin it toward a time-tested trio that lays to waste the likes of Cream, Rush, and ZZ Top? I purchased Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" for her, invoked the likes of the Archangel Gabriel, shook some maracas, brewed some ginger tea and voila! She's been tickling the ivories ever since, and the ox and the lamb keep time. When I see my father again, I shall say, "I have no gift to bring, but listen to this instead."
