I bought this hole saw to drill a hole in a firebox for a smoker I am building. The hole needed to fit a 6" sch 40 steel pipe in it. The firebox is made out of 3/16" steel plate. I drilled a pilot hole with a steel step bit to make the start easier, and applied a generic oil based lubricant frequently. The chuck barely fit the bit for hole saw, but it did fit. I started drilling with a cordless drill, and moved to a drill press geared down to 300rpm once the drill died. Going slow with medium pressure and plenty of lubricant this hole saw had no trouble with 3/16" steel plate. The hole saw appears to still be in decent condition, and I believe I could get a couple more holes through steel plate out of it. This hole saw also cut the perfect sized hole for a sch40 6" steel pipe. ... show more

Cut 4 holes in Nema 1 boxes 12 gauge mild steel. Used cutting oil cuts with no problem. Shows very little wear. The Hole-saw is so heavy it acts like a fly-wheel when you stop cutting. Be careful.

Right out of the package you can see that this is a well made, heavy duty rugged, product. It is clearly very sharp. I used it immediately and it went through the wall board like a hot knife through butter and had no trouble with the 2x4. The teeth are rather coarse so it cuts very fast. I am confident that I can use it on sheet metal. Be sure to use a drill with a side handle as the sharp teeth will grab and 4 1/2" is a long lever arm and can twist your wrist. They are measuring the blade inside-edge to inside-edge. That is WRONG! You need to measure OUTSIDE-EDGE to OUTSIDE EDGE because that is what your hole size will be! Those are basic fundamentals. Seems to be heavy-duty construction. I will update once I've used it.
