  • Patience, Detail Oriented
Color: White
I got this for my nephew who just turned 12. He is very interested in space and space travel (wants to go to Mars). I thought this would be a good toy to get him to work on putting things together and understanding the mechanics of it all. Plus, since it is solar, I figured it might get him outside a little more. He is typical of his generation in that he loves his computer. This was a good toy to get him off his computer and work with his hands and mind to build something physical. ... show more

  • Very good toy kit to introduce kids about electrical, solar, mechanical engineering aspect of things
Color: Yellow
I gave this toy to some kids of friend of age 6 - 10 during the holiday. I did not expect them to do and finish all by themselves. Normally some adult and old kid supervision are needed, to make sure the parts are cut out properly, not lost and organized, With adult looked over, the kids were able to help each other to assemble the first three working robots. During the course, with some adult explanation, the kids besides building the toy, having fun, getting the reward of getting something working, they were introduced and learnt some electrical, solar power aspect for driving a motor to do mechanical things. These are some of the basic "how things work" throughout our day to day life. For $16, it is a valuable gift for kids. I think STEM toys like this is very good for introducing and letting the kids of different ages to think and work as a project and to learn science and engineering while playing together, and further developing their interests as they grow up. ... show more

  • This is a Glueless model kit that WILL need some Adult help
Color: White
The first thing you need to understand is that this is a model kit. As in plastic sprues, that have to be carefully cut out, with plastic pieces that will need careful cleaning to remove burs and flashing before it can be put together. Once you open the box you will need to put together many of the different parts and pieces of the ships before you can even build them into something else. This project has roughly 100 plastic parts that when assembled produce roughly 20 parts that can be mixed and matched to create 6 different main vehicles, with the remaining parts that can build 1 additional custom vehicle of a smaller size, When I handed this product over to my 9 year old, he "tried" to follow the instructions, and after 2 hours gave up because the "engine" (Gear box) confused him. So I then took it took over and spent an additional hour to put the rest of the kit together. The gearbox, which is the most essential part of the entire project, and powers 90% of the builds has to be built by hand, with careful care on HOW the gears are fitted into the gear box ratio. The instructions are not very clear and after about 45 minutes of trial and error I finally was able to figure out what the instructions were trying to say with their black and white blurry pictures. The solar panel mechanism also has to be wired together, with careful care that you place padding support under the panels and careful placement of the wires through designated holes to allow them to feed into a special connection socket that allows it to attach to the "Battery" (Green Cylinder in the pictures), or directly to the machines themselves. All of the components are included in the Box, and while it seems strange, you don't need any glue, however you will need three AAA batteries which do not come with the set, for the battery charger, and when you want to change the batteries you WILL have to take the UFO saucer section apart to get to the battery housing, which personally I think is a dumb design and is asking for the education toy to break easier as the tongue and groove system is not intuitive. The set comes with a green capacitor ("Battery" as mentioned above), that is wired into a special socket that can be powered by either the solar panel, or the battery charger. Which allows for the toy to be played with in any kind of weather setting. The Green Capacitor works as a temporary universal battery for the various toys, and takes roughly 15 minutes to fully recharge, and last's for about 3 hours per charge. The solar panel will take about 2 hours to charge the battery, and usually loses the interest of any kid by that point. The solar cell also is not super efficient, and needs a strong source of direct sunlight to operate. The overall device and set, is designed to be modular. Pieces can be removed relatively easy, and pieces can be added together or socketed in through special connection point, that allow the child to build various vehicles and creations. The set comes with instructions to build six different craft, however it's not limited to that. There are a wide diversity of socket points and connection points that allow the child to take pieces that aren't being used by the battery powered vehicle, and make their own separate vehicle. Roughly about two different Vehicles can be made from the pieces, depending on what the child is making. I will say, as mentioned before, one difficulty in building this set, is that the gearbox has to be done exact, and the instructions are somewhat vague on how that is done. I think the thing that took me the longest time to put together was the gearbox and that took me roughly 45 minutes out of the hour build. I made multiple mistakes, and would get it together to realize that something was not lining up correctly and have to take it apart again. Which is saying something as I design and build micro electronic robots for games and toys as a hobby and had a very difficult time figuring this toy out. However, aside from the technical difficulties and limitations, this is a great product and a great toy and it is a great way to teach children about different mechanical structures and how things are powered and operated. I do believe that the gearbox and the complexity of putting it together is a little bit outside of a child's capability, and feel that they need to release the gearbox as a pre-built structure, so that children aren't required to try to figure out how to make that work, because it is very sensitive and if you don't have it in the right configuration nothing works. Aside from that it is a good product, and definitely well worth getting, as it teaches children problem solving skills, though it would be best if parents and or teachers were involved in helping kids with various steps in building this product. ... show more

  • rather fragile
Color: Yellow
Dec 19, 2023 6-in-1 STEM Solar Robot Kit, Solar Robot Space Toys Building Science Kits. The kit came with good instructions, so that is great. However, the pieces were a bit fragile and one critical piece broke, so could not complete the desired build. This of course was disappointing.

  • Yep!
Color: Yellow
Exactly as described! Stem toys are sometimes challenging for kids, depending on age, but this set's challenges are opportunities to learn. The solar power is very cool for this type of learning toy, and it makes this set much more interesting for kids (and adults). To get what this kit offers, I would expect the list price to be at least twice what it is. I highly recommend this set. ... show more
