You will have to anneal this steel before trying to cut it. It is super hard. I had to put it in the forge and heat it to a glowing orange and then let it cool down until cool to touch. It is now ready to be worked. It makes great knives and is easy to harden. 4 stars only because it does not come annealed. ... show more

Like others have reported, this steel has hardened spots all over it. I was able to drill a few holes but mostly met with resistance too difficult to overcome. Beginners should skip this for product for knife making and try something different.

Some sections of this steel I was easily able to cut with my band saw. Other areas, the blade wouldn't even scratch it. Even with a new blade. If you're making knives with it, you should already be equipped to get the steel into a soft state.

To be honest I was skeptical. I thought for the price I couldn't go wrong. With the ability to return it if I didn't like it I decided to pull the trigger and bought 5 1.5x.12 bars. They were packaged just like described. The bars were exact, flat, and straight. I did a spark test and it was no doubt high carbon steel. It's made in China, but so is everything else. I turned those bullets into knife blanks. It took some work to surface grind the blanks to true them up, but not bad. I'm looking forward to beveling and finishing these knives. this steel is very clean and very shinney. all most like chrome.no rust. around 1/8 inch give or take. i have got 1095 steel before hot and cold rolled, but none as clean as this metal. very good price too.
