just a normal and good quality foam cutter, i’ve used it for about 3 hours in total with intermittency and it’s been working really well without changing the wire. i’ve used a foam cutter before so depending on how well you get used to it.

We were doing a padded fireplace hearth cover so our grandchild would not get hurt. We were using high density foam 2" thick. The wand featrure in this package worked great and saved us a lot of time. We are not professionals but this tool for the price was a godsend. The bow wire heats as describes and cut the foam quickly like a hot knife in soft butter. The pen works well. I highly recommend and would purchase again if needed.

    • Good solution but needs improvement
This was purchased for creating stage props out of Styrofoam insulation. For the intended purpose it works great but I'm not sure how long it will last. Even on low voltage (around 8 volts) the shaping tools bend under mild pressure. The plastic around the shaping tip has also begun to melt. The wire cutting tool begins to glow under low voltage. I haven't tried it at full power but I can't imagine that it would last very long at high temperature. The kit does come with a spool of extra wire. I would recommend that users start at the lowest voltage and work their way up to determine the minimum heat level to cut their desired material. Another needed improvement would be a longer cord - or - a pocket clip for the regulator so that it can be clipped to a belt or pocket. As it is, the regular ends up flopping on the ground as I work. All that being said, I'm still giving this 4 stars because it has made my project drastically easier and is less than half the price of a professional-level hot wire cutter. ... show more

TLDR: Great value and works great for cutting EPS foam for villages with a couple minor annoyances. We have tried many different foam cutters over the years and most have very limited durability or are just generally low quality. This one feels like the right mix between price and quality. It comes in a nice box with foam inserts that separate the pieces (as I suppose a foam cutter should...) that I wouldn't call a "case", but can easily be reused if you need to store it. One small complaint and one relatively large one. The biggest issue with this tool is that the cord between the power adapter and where it would plug into the wall is very short, and can't be switched out as it is hard-wired into the adapter. The cord between the adapter and the hand tool is longer, but still not long enough. This means if you are working on a larger layout like the one in my picture you end up with a real extension cord management issue. The other small complaint is that dialing in the exact right temperature can be a bit tricky. For our purposes we use an extremely narrow range and have to adjust fairly frequently. Other than that, the wife likes using the different attachments and agrees this is the best cutter we have used yet. ... show more
