  • Good quality

  • Perfect crosshatch without the stress
I’m currently rebuilding an old 350 and needed to freshen up the cylinder walls before putting in new rings. I’ve used the old three-stone hones before, but they can be a real pain to keep centered and consistent. This ball hone is a game changer for a DIY guy. The 240 grit gave me a really nice, even crosshatch pattern that looks professional. It’s flexible enough that it doesn't grab or chatter, which always makes me nervous when I'm working on a block I've already put money into. I just kept it lubricated with some light oil and used a medium speed on my drill, and it cleaned up the glazing in no time. The "berries" on the brush held up well through all eight cylinders and they don't look like they've worn down much at all, so I’ll definitely be able to use it on the next project. Just a heads up: make sure you give the cylinders a really thorough cleaning with soapy water after you're done, because this thing does its job and leaves plenty of fine grit behind. For the price, it saved me a trip to the machine shop and gave me exactly the finish I was looking for. ... show more

  • My Mistake on the Size, But The Tool Itself Looks Top-Notch
I have to start this review with a bit of user error: I miscalculated and ordered this 4-inch cylinder hone when I actually needed a different size for my project. Unfortunately, that means I can't speak to how well it performs the actual job of honing a cylinder. However, I can absolutely speak to the build quality, and based on that, this is a very impressive tool. I'm giving it a strong four stars because it feels like a professional-grade piece of equipment. The flexible shaft is sturdy, and the 240-grit abrasive balls are securely attached and look very uniform. It has all the hallmarks of a hone that would produce an excellent cross-hatch finish. It looks and feels like it's built to last. I can't give it that final fifth star because I wasn't able to put it through its paces in an engine block. But the quality is self-evident. My advice to other buyers is to be more careful than I was and double-check your cylinder bore measurements! If this is the size you need, I have every reason to believe you'll be very happy with the quality. ... show more

  • Proper Size and Quality for a VR6 Rebuild
Size: 3.25'' (83 mm) Style: 240 Grit
This cylinder hone appears to be very well made and finished nicely. The build quality looks solid, the ball brush is evenly assembled, and everything feels consistent with what you’d want to see in a tool like this. The 3-1/4 inch size is a perfect match for my 12v VW VR6 engine, which was exactly what I was looking for when I ordered it. I’m not quite at the stage of my rebuild where I’m ready to actually hone the cylinders yet, so I haven’t put it to work just yet. That said, based on the construction, flexibility, and overall feel of the tool, I don’t see any red flags. It looks like it will do exactly what it’s supposed to do when the time comes. Assuming it performs as well as it appears it will, this should be a great addition to my engine rebuilding tools. I’ll plan to update this review once I’ve actually used it in the block, but so far I’m happy with the fit, finish, and apparent quality. ... show more

  • put the hone down, step away from the drill, and no engines get hurt
Size: 3.25'' (83 mm) Style: 240 Grit
The media could not be loaded. i have been building engines since the 1980s (yeah i’m old) and i have never seen a ball hone with this much lack of quality control. currently build 4 cylinder turbo engines for import drag cars, and needed this finer than normal hone to set up a long rod stroker with super short pistons (wrist pins are behind the oil rings) with 2mm ring lands. i don’t think there is a single ball on this hone that is actually ball shaped, most of them are tear drop or duck bill shaped, and there are several that are stuck together. (see pictures) it gets even worse when you chuck it up into a drill. the shaft is nowhere near concentric, which means functionality will be non existent. (see video) the abrasive material on the “balls” is not consistent, as there are black and white anomalies in the surface of every single one, this is a hard fail, and offers zero value for the money. these pistons are over three bills each, there’s no way i’m risking them on this hone. ... show more

  • Took care of light scoring on cylinder
Cylinder Hone Tool My husband used this tool to hone out a cast iron small block 350 which had some light scoring in one cylinder. He found the quality to be similar of that of one that he rented from a parts store in the past. The ad advertised it as 240 grit and it was on par with that based on the pattern it left. Overall he was very satisfied with the finish. It left a perfect cross hatch and eliminated the light scoring in the cylinder ... show more

  • Dingle Berry Hone
Size: 4.125'' (105 mm) Style: 240 Grit
This 4.125 ball hone measures EXACTLY that size. So if you are intending to use this on a 400 cubic inch chevy or pontiac it is probably not going to give good even pressure against the cylinder wall, and I wouldn't recommend it for them. You will have to tilt the hone slightly, especially if it has been bored .030 over. This hone will be better on a 4.030-4.060 size so all the globes are evenly pressing against the cylinder. These are very simple to use and work great for cleaning up glazed but good bores. All it takes is a few quick strokes, no more than about 15 seconds per hole. They are really durable and will last for many years and engine builds. Just remember it is exact size, no extras. The value is only average, at $45 it is not signifigantly cheaper than the name branded flex hone, even though it works just as well. ... show more

  • Decent Ball Hone at a Good Price
Size: 4.125'' (105 mm) Style: 240 Grit
Decent ball type cylinder hone at a good price. I got the 4-1/8" diameter and it appears to be pretty much right on that. Shank diameter is a stout 8mm/.3125" approx. Runs nice and true. I dinged one star as I think the berries could be a little better formed comparing to my old USA made one I've had for years. I don't think it is going to be an issue really but of course as with any hone you will want to break it in on a junk block or piece of pipe before use. Recommend. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you found it helpful! ... show more
