There are long-respected metal polishes that barely accomplish anything on stainless steel. Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish is a thick and relatively dry paste that does a reasonably good job on stainless. Then there is this one, in my estimation more effective. It spreads and applies more easily, about the consistency of sour cream. It's also more costly, but probably worth it. Works great on a 62 year old set of factory wire wheel style wheel covers; admittedly, they were in decent shape to begin with. I'm not sure this polish would be a substitute for professional polishing and restoration of badly neglected stainless. How good is it? I've tried it on the standard stainless tailpipes of a 2014 VW Sportwagen. The pipes aren't a stainless grade intended for a chrome-like appearance, but it cleans up well, arguably a lot better looking than the accessory tips. Haven't tried the polish yet on other metals. Update: Product is great for an enthusiast (like me) who details and maintains a vintage car. Brightens and polishes stainless trim noticeably, even the pieces I thought were fine before using the 3M. Just be sure that the metal is stainless steel, not something like anodized or clear-coated aluminum. Good stuff. ... show more

After trying a lot of others, this is the only metal polish for hand polishing! I had outstanding results restoring the stainless rocker trim on my 62 Chrysler with it. Helpful hint...use 000 steel wool dipped in the polish for the first round if the metal has pitting, it will take almost all of it out, then re polish with cloth, and buff with microfiber towel...looks like a mirror when done. I had an old, scuffed up and filthy Eames Management chair in my garage, and I finally decided to drag it into the house and see what I could do to clean it up. After vacuuming and dusting the chair, I could see that the aluminum was in really bad shape. I did some research, and bought this product to try to clean it.     • Does miracle work on boat chrome

Our Cobalt boat had a few areas of chrome that I just couldn't get to look right. I tried Walmart chrome polish but it really didn't do much. Even after muscling the chrome clean with cheaper cleaner, it was hard to clean. It had a rainbow like residue that was just a pain to remove. Anyway, I bought this stuff and a package of microfiber cloths. In the first 30 seconds of using it, I could see it was working. On an area of chrome I had scrubbed and scrubbed, this stuff had it looking new with minimal elbow grease. You're going to do a number on whatever rag you use; they will be black when you are done. But I can do a quick chrome polish on our entire boat (25' runabout) in about 20 mins. Couldn't be more pleased. ... show more

If you’re willing to pur in the work, this product is amazing. I have Foose chrome wheels that was tarnishing very bad. I used drill with heavyweight compounding bad then polished with finer pads and they came out very good considering how bad they were. Used Maguires and mothers polishing chrome products before this and it was no comparison to the quality of this product. Good job 3M. I would suggest at the cost of this product to include a few hand polishing pads of various cuts and a good summary on how to use them so buyers understand the process a little better. I imagine the negative reviews from people that didn’t really put the work in required to bring that shiny luster back. ... show more

I bought this to clean a stainless steel stair rail. First, off everyone who wants to use this for stainless steel should know, that the metal will look shinier and a bit darker than the original stainless steel. Second, it didn't get everything (corrosion) off. The rail looks better from a corrosion standpoint, but I am not happy about the way it changed the look of the stainless. Therefore I would not recommend for stainless steel, but it may work o.k. for other metals (haven't tried). ... show more

I use this on the swingarm, as well as linkage. Also, on my race bike bolts where the zinc plating has dulled it cleans them up easily and makes them look like new. This works great, a little goes a long ways. It is easy to dab on bolts and spin them with a cordless impact in a shop towel.

I used this for the chrome parts on a motorcycle restoration project. After using a few other polishing compounds, I liked this one the best. It took care of oxidation and the parts all looked new when I was finished. This will be my go-to chrome polisher for future needs.
