Description

How hard are they? Through-hardened to approximately 58-62 HRC, the highest hardness available in any stainless steel. That is why 440C is the standard material for stainless bearing balls, valve components, and grinding media. What does G100 mean? G100 is a precision grade under ABMA Standard 10. Diameter variation and out-of-roundness are held within 0.0001 inch, with an 8 microinch finish. Lower numbers mean tighter tolerance. G100 suits larger balls. What standard is 440C? 440C is an AISI/SAE material designation, formally UNS S44004, specified in ASTM A276 and AMS 5630. Ball grade is a separate standard: ABMA Std 10 in the US, ISO 3290 internationally. Will these rust? 440C resists rust far better than chrome or carbon steel. Its 16-18% chromium handles humidity, fresh water, and washdown. It is not as corrosion resistant as 304 or 316, so for constant saltwater immersion choose 316 instead. How is 440C different from 440A or 440B? Carbon content. 440A runs 0.65-0.75%, 440B 0.75-0.95%, 440C 0.95-1.20%. I work on pumps for a living. This ball was purchased to use on a shaft seal sleeve to drive the mechanical seal. The pump manufacturer wanted $38.00 for one steel ball. I purchased 25 stainless steel balls for a fraction of that cost. A more premium material for the application, 25 times as many, and 25 of them for way less money. The fit was perfect. I used these to replace the valves on a large hookah, and they work perfectly. The original bearings started rusting after a month or two, but these have seen 6 months of hard use, and looks exactly like they did when they came out of the package.

Using these for an atypical project but in case anyone else is looking... These fit great in the second chamber of my Cali Crusher without blocking the holes and slipping through the openings. Would also be a great option for the "bottle & nickle" method as they are alot cleaner than your average coin. A good cheap way to get a finer grind without having to buy another piece. Also good for a make shift wicca box :) ... show more

The seller is claiming that "They will not rust", this is completely false assuming these are actually 440 stainless. 440 stainless is mostly iron, around 80%, it's not rust proof, but it's more rust resistant than the more common chrome steel bearings out there. If you want something that won't rust you want 300 series stainless bearings not 400. Most of the bad reviews I've seen a result of not understanding what 440 stainless is; it's magnetic, it can rust, and the product description isn't helping. There's nothing really wrong with the bearings, the reason it's getting 3 stars is the misleading product info. They are very consistent and as perfectly round as I can measure. They are .001" undersized but so are my existing worn bearings. Using these for my bike, while servicing the rear axle one of the bearings fell out and rolled off to who knows where, rather than wasting any more time looking for it, I opted to spend 6 bucks and get some new ones. These will also likely be better than my old bearings, which are likely cheaper chrome steel which isn't as corrosion resistant. ... show more
