Description
The new Endangered Species Forever stamps, released by the Postal Service, aim to highlight the combined efforts of dedication, humanity, and optimism in conservation. These stamps, celebrating the near half-century legacy of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), are more than just postage; they represent the countless species that have been pulled back from extinction's edge in the U.S. since the ESA's inception. Nearly 50 years ago, the ESA became a pivotal law in wildlife conservation. It has since provided protection to over 1,670 species in the U.S. and approximately 700 foreign species, bolstering their survival prospects. Today's release of the Endangered Species stamps is not only a nod to this significant legislation but also a tribute to the individuals, organizations, and agencies dedicated to wildlife protection and recovery. This set of 20 stamps features stunning photographs of endangered animals from across the 50 states and American territories, including two species from North America that reside near U.S. borders. Peter Pastre, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy at the Postal Service, emphasized at the dedication ceremony the deeper narrative each stamp and animal represents. "These stamps," he stated, "are a fusion of hard work, human empathy, and hope, crafted to increase awareness about endangered species and the ongoing efforts to safeguard them." The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, through a meticulous process, designates species as either threatened or endangered – the latter meaning they are at risk of extinction across much or all of their natural habitat. Since the ESA's establishment, scientists estimate that hundreds of species in the U.S. have been successfully saved from extinction.
