  • A solid entry level CNC/Laser engraver
Out of the box, this is a collection of parts with some fairly basic instructions. Most folks should be able to follow along, although there are a few things I wish they'd done to make the assembly a touch easier. The biggest issue is the instruction to mount the upper bakelites "46.5mm" from the rear end of the Y axis aluminum brackets. It would have been very helpful if the brackets were etched or otherwise marked at 46.5mm to save some time aligning. It's pretty important that the bakelites are installed at this distance to ensure that the aluminum bed you secure your product to is all within the engravable area. It's also important that they both sides are as close to the same distance apart to ensure that the X axis is moving across a true horizontal path without excess friction. After assembly, I found the unit to be slow and lots of grinding chatter could be heard as you move the x and y axis. Here's a tip I found on one of the many many groups dedicated to using the 3018 machine: Start with the Y axis: Loosen the nuts on both ends of the guide rods (the two rods on each side of the screw), as well as the aluminum brackets on the Y axis (not too loose, but enough that the machine is not tight. Jog the Y motor forward until it won't go any further, and tighten the front screws. Jog the Y motor to the back of the table until it won't go any further and tighten the rear screws. This will effectively ensure that both guide rods are perfectly aligned with the screw for smoother travel. Smoother travel means you can increase the maximum speeds and accelerations of your motors (google this part for an explanation of how to fine tune the GRBL controller). Do the same thing for the X axis, loosening the guide rods and the aluminum pieces on the top part of the bakelites. Do not loosen the bolts at the lower part of the bakelites connecting to the Y axis aluminum. Jog all the way left, tighten, then all the way right, and tighten. The software that comes bundled with the router is not the best, and there is no Cad/Cam software included for the spindle, only a program to transfer GCode to the GRBL controller module. LaserGRBL is included, a free program for engraving with the Laser. It wasn't hard to find design software online. Don't expect the performance of a high end CNC machine, this is an open-source design meant for home users and hobbyists who want to get their feet wet in engraving. That being said, this machine is pretty solid once it's assembled and tuned up. There are relatively inexpensive upgrades out there. ... show more

  • Better than expected
Not bad at all. Better than expected. Just remember that you get what you pay for. It was fun to put it together. Nothing too difficult. Plenty of videos on youtube on how to use it. Have it for 3 months now and no major issues. Laser head could be better. I cannot get a clear laser lines. As far as I can tell its just the low quality of the laser. Its powerful enough, but you cannot focus the beam to get a nice engravement / cut. Again, you get what you pay for. You can always upgrade the laser and motor later on to a much better parts. This kit is only to get you to try this hobby quickly and if you like this type of crafts, you can get a more expensive, better and more capable kit. Good for beginners with good enough results for having fun. Not for commercial productions. ... show more

  • Been using for little over a year.
Size: Extra Large -2
Bought this 3018 little over a year ago and have been very happy with the performance. At first without any experience on a cnc or laser I didn't use it much. I'm still learning a lot every time I use it but a lot of my initial fears went away after I realized it wasn't near as hard as it seems. Software is easy to use and the more I use it the more I find that it can do. Initial setup of the machine isn't hard just take your time and get it right and there are a lot of you tube videos on putting together a 3018. Recently my laser stopped working and I contacted support and after a couple of emails back and forth I received a new laser. Support was very helpful and easy to work with. After a year I would definitely buy this machine again. Now looking forward to making some upgrades and doing more. ... show more

  • SLOW
I would not call this a piece of junk. What little I have done with it shows promise. Its seems sturdy. And is repeatable. And that is the end of the good news. The 775 spindle motor is supposed to be near 300 watts, but the power supply max output is 120, which may be why the machine is so slow. Engraving with the router is not bad, but the simplest carvings take 30 minutes. I had to turn the feed rates down by 66% under recommendations, because either the end mill would break, or the wood would start to burn and chatter really bad. This could be the tooling as well, as I have not tried any other tooling besides the one that is supplied. I have not had the opportunity to use the laser yet. And am not sure I will. I do not care to clamp a square laser into a round hole. Plus I am missing a piece of hardware needed to mount the lasers card. On sale it is a great tool to start learning with. At full price I would pass. In time I may post more on this machine, but this is at best a starter CNC. More on the bad news. The plug for the usb input broke. Not sure how but fortunately it was still in the return window. That being said I am saddened that this whole unit will be replaced for a cheap GRBL control module, but it will. Needless to say treat the controller like it is glass. I have had a second controller go bad. this time the y axis would lock the motor, but not move. once the move was supposed to be done, the motor released. i tested the cables and the motor, they were fine. every stepper I plugged in to the y axis did the same. So another return. Other issues I had, was the only time I could get the offline controllers to cut was with the pre-supplied programs. Everything I uploaded to the controller did not work. Also I was never able to finish anything but the most simplest of cuts without the unit stopping at some random place in the program. I tried different pc's, different ports, purchased a shielded usb. none worked. I took the unit to my step fathers house to try a much faster internet provider (i was using easel) and that is when the unit failed again. This unit is currently way more expensive then similar DIY desktops, so it is not worth upgrading this one. Should they drop the price, the machine has very good repeatability. I restarted that failed carve i do not know how many times and it went to the same place every time....til the last. ... show more
