This mug? This mug gets me. It’s the kind of cup that doesn’t just hold coffee — it holds your entire personality. Especially if your personality is 90% caffeine and 10% inappropriate humor. When I first saw the “UNT” design with that strategically black handle, I did a double take, then a spit take (not from this mug — I’m not wasting good coffee). It’s the perfect blend of classy sass and subtle trash, which coincidentally is also how I describe myself on dating apps. Holds 11 ounces of pure judgment, sarcasm, or just your morning brew. Understated humor for North Texas alumni pride. Go Mean Green!
The university on my diploma reads "North Texas State University," but they changed the name just a few years after I graduated to "University of North Texas." A fellow alum showed me his coffee mug soon after the name change, and I always enjoyed the quiet humor in deciding to decorate the handle to match the size and color of the UNT font. Legend has it that these first appeared in the CoOp bookstore, with painted and unpainted handles, and this painted handle version was far outselling the others-- but suddenly they were pulled from the shelf when someone realized why they were so popular. I recently broke my long-time favorite (bourbon-branded) ceramic mug, and decided to find the classic UNT mug as a replacement daily use coffee container. Being right handed, when I set it down, the mug is innocent as a dove from my perspective. I'll need to be careful when having coffee with a visitor.
