  • Review by an "advanced beginner"
Format: Paperback
The first ten pages are an (almost*) complete summary of music notation for the piano, from finger numbering to "D.S. al Coda," which is extremely useful. But it's concise, not a tutorial. The back of the book has a comparable summary of scales, chords, and arpeggios. It also has a good selection of music. There is also free online material, including videos for each song with "falling bars," so if you want to use that with a tablet instead of sheet music, you can. This isn't a piano course (I'm using "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course," which is excellent), but it's a great supplement. *Almost -- Basically everything not in the key of C is ignored. Not unreasonable for a beginner's song book, but an extra page on other keys would round things out nicely. ... show more

  • A Good Primer
Format: Kindle
I love the fundamentals were listed on the first pages. The stars indicate the difficulty of each piece, which is perfect. The tips with the lightbulb are age-appropriate, and I love when the author introduces the chord structure for the left hand. I learned to play the piano 50 years ago, and I'm now looking for a good book for my granddaughter. The only thing I would change is that I'd make five books out of this. Everything I learned in nine years of lessons is in this one book, but advanced concepts are over the heads of beginners. Having said that, this book can serve as a primer for beginners, and some of its pages should be introduced when the pianist has a solid understanding of chords, scales, and arpeggios. The thing that stood out the most was when the staff listed chord structures. As a child, I never put together the relationship, and I could have been a better pianist if that had been explained to me. All in all, a good book. ... show more

  • Easy to Play
Format: Paperback
Very nice, this piano teacher says “beginning piano players should find it easy to play most of the songs an after they have learned the treble clef lines and spaces.”
