Description

Your Ableton Live Studio gives you the information you need to set up your own home or project studio using Ableton Live as your digital audio workstation (DAW). You'll learn how to decide which system is best for you and learn to install, set up, and use Ableton Live software with your Mac or PC. Your Ableton Live Studio will help you decide what kind of studio you need, where to put it, how to make it sound better, and how to furnish it with the right gear. You'll also learn to record, mix, use plug-ins, edit audio, hook up external MIDI devices, and record or edit MIDI in Ableton Live. The book also focuses on how Live is different from many other DAWs, and how it can be physically "played" in both a studio and live environment. It's just what you need to get started today, whether you plan to pursue music as a hobby or as a profession. Read more

  • Your Home Computer Studio with Live as your Daw, corrected title.
I agree with the other review that there is very little Ableton Live in this Ableton Live book. I'm torn on how to review this book though because it is a great book if you area brand spankin newb. For someone just now starting out in music production with very little knowledge of the usual gear needed and you have a typical home pc computer that you bought at a local store and want to dive into the world of music production then this book is excellent. It covers computer specs, types of microphones, DI boxes, types of headphones, etc. The author does not go over board in saying get this get that rather he suggests things you will need to acquire as time passes and shows you how to take it step by step at your own pace. what you need first and why. I bought it in hopes of filling up any small gaps of information that I had but found it leaving me personally wanting more. Anything I came across could have been easily summed up by a Google search. If you want a good starting book on ableton live but have not gotten the software yet, you can download the uesr manuals from ableton for free online. I easily found the pdf manuals for both the full size live 8 version and the lite version on Ableton's website. That or download the demo's as they are part of the install as well. The manual's are excellent and not your typical expected drap reads. I would suggest starting there and working through the tutorials that are inside the program under help as well rather then get this book. That is unless, as I've mentioned, you are just now starting out with a home studio and need a primer on all aspects found in one. The author recommends reading the power series book next, which I wish I would have gotten instead. ... show more

  • If Abelton is your first DAW, you need this book!
Great for entry/beginner level Abelton users. I had never used a DAW before Abelton. One the day I purchased Abelton I also ordered this book. It was a life saver once it arrived. It gave me step by step information on what to do and how to get my first DAW (Abelton) up and running. Everything from studio and room prep to information and prep to do on the computer end. Great book. If you're getting into Abelton and dont know much about DAWs you need this book. ... show more

  • Very Little Ableton Live
I ordered this book but am returning it. Only three out of ten chapters in the book actually delve into the workings of Live; the rest of the book is either concerned with setting up a music studio or using external hardware with Ableton. The three chapters that actually cover the operation of the software are not very detailed. The illustrations included often show only a very isolated part of the GUI, and I had trouble sometimes figuring out where they were located in the app screen. Of course, I'm a new user of the software, so I'm struggling a bit to understand it. Perhaps I didn't understand that the inclusion of the word "Studio" in the title might mean that the focus of this book was not limited to the operation of the software. So perhaps it's my mistake. But it's one that others might make, so I'm leaving this review to help someone with their decision about which reference to purchase. I'm only giving it three stars because I felt it was billed as a reference work for the operation of the software, but it's really only mildly of value for that purpose. ... show more

  • Filling in the blanks
Like some others here, I'm a computer tech who has taken up digital music production as a hobby. Ableton Live's Intro came with a little Korg NanoKey I got to mess around with, and I got hooked. There are tons of great tutorials online, about how to do wonderful things with Ableton Live, but not much about how to set it up, what gear you might need, and how to set up a home studio. This book provided those answers, in an easy to access manner. I've read complaints from others here about the lack of in-depth Ableton information in this book- but to be honest, the title tells you what the main thrust of the book is about- the studio. There is a good overview of the software- enough to whet my appetite and get me messing around with it for hours. There is practical advice in this book about equipment, room treatments, and digital basics. I now know what to budget for, and strive towards. Even if you are not running Ableton specifically, this book will provide you with some great advice for your home studio. ... show more

  • Your Ableton Live Studio
Your Ableton Live Studio is a perfect example of a book written by someone who is very familiar with a product, but has no idea how to translate that into useful information. I don't mean to sound harsh but lets look at the facts. The first 98 pages are not about the subject. They try to be a primer on using your computer as a DAW (digital audio workstation). That's fine, except that is not the subject at hand. When they finally do get around to talking about Ableton, they use a new, sort of modern approach to instructional information. They talk about a feature and illustrate it with a (muddy) black and white photo. They don't actually give you an example, ever, of how to do anything. I love the references to color items in the black and white photos; not really very useful. The authors defend their approach by saying that they don't want to show you a particular way to do something, just give you a general idea of a feature or control. They don't want to lock you into doing something one specific way. Well that's just great, but that is not how people learn technical material. I am a programmer and writer and artist by trade and I deal with technical material all the time. This approach has never worked for me. Please remember this is just one man's opinion. If you decide to buy it, I hope you have better luck with this title than I did. ... show more
