I'm a pretty standard XL, but for tops can sometimes jump to an XXL just for length (because... boobs). I'm 5'5, about 213 and athletic. I have a pretty short torso but XL crop tops are generally too short for my liking. The 2x was perfect length wise and gave me a loose casual fit that I love.
